I'm looking at some Corsair DDR3 1333 for a new X38 board. There are two parts that would work, but even the cheapest standard XMS is $300, and I'd rather not spend another $90 for the DHX version. However, Corsair's site is a bit confusing on the specs...

TWIN3X2048-1333C9: Tested at 1333 9-9-9-24, but SPD programmed at 1066 7-7-7-20.

TWIN3X2048-1333C9DHX: Also tested as 1333 9-9-9-24, and indeed SPD=1333 9-9-9-24. Includes heat sink rather than simple spreader.

Why is the first part sold as 1333 9-9-9-24, but with SPD of 1066 7-7-7-20, even though it can clearly do the correct speed and timings, and in fact is ADVERTISED at those settings?! Isn't 9-9-9-24 close or equal to JEDEC standard for 1333? So its not exactly high-performance to begin with...

DHX version came out later.

SPD is overated. I would rather take lower spd if you are going to overclock it anyway.

I have my system up and running, and the TWIN3X2048-1333C9DHX is indeed running at 9-9-9-24 on my DX38BT motherboard. So far so good! Now what to do with my 8800GT? It overheats after about 3 minutes of Crysis at stock fan speeds... I wish they would have just stuck with the cooler that is on the 8800GTS...

Use one of the tools for the card and increase the fan speed. IIRC, they are 30% at stock so increase the fan speed and you should be good to go.

Is there any way I can make it permanent without hacking the BIOS? I hate messing with things and I rarely overclock...

However, my 8800GTS overclocks so well that I think I will risk modifying the BIOS. It runs 650/950 without breaking a sweat and stays cool at 60% fan (65°C)...

You won't be hacking the bios. Nvidia Ntune will do it. Also, IIRC, Riva Tuner and ATI tool will also but, check to be sure.
