This whole hooplah seems esports centered. As if Valve wants to bring CS back into mainstream esporting in the way SCII did for SC. I don't think I'll enjoy it. :/ I don't play games to be competitive. I'll buy it but if theres not a "fun" aspect to it and its just esport CS I'll stick with source.

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS: GO) will expand upon the team-based action gameplay that it pioneered when it was launched 12 years ago.
CS: GO features new maps, characters, and weapons and delivers updated versions of the classic CS content (de_dust, etc.). In addition, CS: GO will introduce new gameplay modes, matchmaking, leader boards, and more.
"Counter-Strike took the gaming industry by surprise when the unlikely MOD became the most played online PC action game in the world almost immediately after its release in August 1999," said Doug Lombardi at Valve. "For the past 12 years, it has continued to be one of the most-played games in the world, headline competitive gaming tournaments and selling over 25 million units worldwide across the franchise. CS: GO promises to expand on CS' award-winning gameplay and deliver it to gamers on the PC as well as the next gen consoles and the Mac."
CS: GO is being developed by Valve in cooperation with Seattle-based Hidden Path Entertainment. The title is targeted for release in early 2012 and will be playable at this year's PAX Prime and Eurogamer Expo 2011.

i'm hoping it's free but i know better haha
you can still play regular css for fun

i'll wait on league play reviews before buying this.

however IF it brings consoles and pc players together, i''ll get it.
just to own people who think controllers > kb+mouse for fps's.

Lets hope the matchmaking is as wonderful as Left 4 Deads!

I'm not really reading anything that I would be interested in with this. I fart around in CS:S sometimes but I've sort of tired of it as a game. Never was a competitive player though, just screwed around in pubs.

Why? it's not a console exclusive.

Some people think that if a game is being developed for both PC and console, then the PC version will most definitely suck.

It's true probably 50% of the time, depending on your definition of "suck". (I know some people on these forums who consider any PC game to be shitty if it doesn't have photorealistic graphics or cutting-edge Direct-X-seventeen or whatever.)

Valve, however, knows how to cater to their PC audience, so there's nothing to worry about. Hell, the original Counter-Strike was ported to Xbox and I don't see anyone whining.

I'm not sure how watering down (porting) an already established PC game mod to a console is anywhere near the same as developing a new game for PC and consoles simultaneously.

I honestly don't see why people still love Valve. Their last game was a 6 hour campaign running a very old, outdated engine.

Production value. Good writing/voice acting performances. High entertainment value.

Gets my money each and every time.

But hey, that's just me. And the game lasted me well over 6 hours.

Ok, but the last time they developed a game simultaneously for both PC and console, it worked out well. (Portal 2)

As long as they're still using the source engine with hitboxes, it will fail to all people who play 1.6 competitively. Hitboxes just are not an accurate depiction of where the actual model is.

Unless they improve the hitboxes and not-so-great net code that's found in CS:S, I don't see this game doing well competitively.

Don't get me wrong, I love CS:S, but the hitboxes and net code cause many annoyances that aren't found in 1.6.

When I think of "consolitis" I usually worry about gutted controls (to make it easier to play on controllers).

Obviously not a problem in games that don't utilize complex controls to begin with, but to those that do it can really detriment the quality of the game.....precisely what happened from Crysis to Crysis 2. Gutted suit functions and gutted movement mechanics to make it easier for controllers.

This is hands down my most anticipated game of the decade.

I've played CS 1.6 since 2002, and the game is pretty much dead on the competitive side. This may just be the revival that the world's #1 competitive FPS needs.

CS got old and boring after beta 6.6 , now it is just a bunch of people who play office and think they are pro gamers.

Honestly, the entire appeal of CS:S and 1.6 is league play to me. It really brought my group of 5-8 friends together. Hell, just a single friend and I spent hours and hours throwing smoke grenades on an empty server buying them back with the console.

It better be better than Left 4 Deads matchmaking, mIRC was better than that in my opinion. That was just a bunch of people meeting up on a Gamesurge server.

This reminds me of my college days in 1999... spending my tuition money and study hours in PC Lan centers in So. Calif...

Money Management does make a difference sometime - if you don't get enough kills you can't afford a deagle and AWP combo or such and may be stuck with an mp5... then again I pwned everyone with just the mp5

Anyhow I want them to bring back "bunny hopping" and ban buy time - I like to run and buy weapons at the same time to get somewhere fast...I missed jumping over and shooting people matrix style...

Marek ".PhP" Kadek is one of the players in seattle. This is what he wrote on Playzone.cz :
- this game is not going to replace CS 1.6, or CS:S, it is primary made for consoles, PC version is just kind of a "bonus"
- at the moment, the game looks more like HL2DM
- There is no recoil and there will never be. (because of the consoles)
- the game runs on L4D2 engine
- SourceTV is NOT a priority
- they are working on match making system
- new money system
- no kevlar (this should be fixed in the future)
- maps are simplyfied for XBOX style, less ways, most fights are close range
- Hidden Path (Valve only finances the game) is trying to make all weapons balanced.

Valve is going to continue updating CS:S, and tomorrow they will also talk with the players about the future of CS:S...

"We walked through their office to a small lounge area where they formally welcomed us, explained the game is pre-beta and that they wanted our honest feedback, and quickly released us into two game testing rooms, each with ten PCs. We loaded up the developer version of Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and we were off...

Perhaps poetically, the first map we jumped into was de_dust, a map remains a sacred cow and the face of classic Counter-Strike and that at lunch Jess warned us was overhauled to become competitively played. My first impression was "WOW". I was surprised at how visually polished the game was. The maps look beautiful, the player skins and animations are smooth, and the gun models are cool! We got to play dust, dust2, inferno, and nuke with confirmation that other CS classic maps such as train and likely some new ones will be included in the release. Visually, the game looked a lot further along than pre-beta. Any new version of CS is going to have to look aesthetically beautiful for e-sports fans and spectators."

Also, the game is based on the latest version of the source engine (duh) ala Portal 2.

edit: I just found this info on the steampowered forums and am posting it here. I have no idea how credible or who this guy is, but they say he's a competitive player that was invited to pre-beta testing at Valve. Take it with a grain of salt.
