Hi all -

Has anybody gotten Counter-Strike (using OpenGL) to work on a T40P with the Mobility FireGL? I still can't get it to work at all - it freezes on the spawning sound. mocca - can you weigh in on this? That is, if you play CS.

Thanks!

Bump....

I just got my T40p (LOVE it by the way...its just so damn sleek) and it crashed the first time I tried CS (right when I chose my player model) and the sound was stuck in a loop. It's imperative that I get CS working because i'll be using the T40p at LAN parties and we pretty much only play CS there :frown:

Yep. That's what happens to me. Direct 3D is available, but it's a far inferior implementation for CS (it's considerably slower in FPS). Anybody have any idea how to fix this? I still can't get CS to work; tried again today by updating video drivers.

Apparently, it's ati2dvag.dll and it's causing an infinite loop... Anybody have any other ideas?

Works fine on my T40 (non p). Must be a driver issue as I have the Radeon 7500 and I've played it fine.

esalaris,

Could you go look into the Driver Tab on the FireGL 9000 Properties and list the Driver Provider, Date, and Version? Also, can you see what it says in the Display > Settings > Advanced > Options tab?

Mine says:

Driver Provider: ATI Technologies Inc.
Driver Date: 4/29/2003
Driver Version: 6.13.10.6344

and

Packaging Version: 7.79.7.3.6-030429a-008981C, which seems to be the current set of drivers available from IBM.

I haven't tried any other drivers since I got my T40p yesterday.

If you want to chat about this more, feel freel to e-mail me at esaleris at myrealbox dot com, and we can get in touch. Maybe we can figure out how to fix it. I miss CS.

Are you playing through OpenGL for sure? I suppose it might be a FireGL 9000 problem only. Which makes me sad.

Please update us if you get CS working... or report back if it is infact the GL specific card that has problems
vs the Radeon 9000 or 7500...

Calling all T40 users! (Both 40 and 40P!)

If you've played Counter-Strike or attempted to, list:

1) What version - mod or retail.
2) What model video card you have.
3) What your experiences are.

I tried a MOD with a Radeon FireGL 9000 with no success. It would freeze and loop the initial cocking sound of the pistol at the beginning of the round. I am able to fly around before choosing a side; as soon as I choose one, I loop and have to hard reset - hold down power for 5 seconds. After I boot up, event viewer shows me that the video card has gone into an infinite loop and the offending dll is ati2dvag.dll.

For FireGL9000, you can try this (make sure you set a restore point before doing this as you can revert back if it creates problems for your system):

1) Goto ATI website and download the FireGL X1/Z1 driver (the lastest one).
2) Unpack it but don't install it (it won't allow you to install it anyway).
3) Goto the unpacked directory and find the file atioglgl.dll
4) Copy the file and paste it in the c:\Windows\System32\ directory (this directory might be different if you don't use standard windows directory structure).

That's pretty much it. The atioglgl.dll is the problem in my case with NWN. And with many trials and errors with various drivers and technique, this technique of replacing the standard opengl dll with the one from FireGL X1/Z1 seem to work best. Hope this help

Sorry I couldn't respond earlier...I was at a LAN actually.

Anyways, I brought the T40p and just ran it in D3D mode, but all was not perfect. It ran great FPS wise, but about 5 times it would simply exit out to the desktop and twice it BSOD'ed. Seeing as how Mocca's solution seems to work (thanks btw, you are like a T40p gawd), I'll go ahead and try that and tell you if it fixes it.

Just a little update. I'm glad to report that CS did indeed work in OpenGL after this little quick fix. Only problem I could notice is that net_graph ended up not working sometimes, but this isn't too big a deal. Thanks again, mocca.

edit - Forgot something: does anyone know a way to set the FSAA and other graphical settings for OpenGL? I can't find it anywhere in the control panels

For the FireGL9000, there is no standard OpenGL tab (they have Configuration tab instead which is very limited). You can download a small program called "Rage3D Tweak" from here. Just click on the file links on the left navigator and download the latest version of the Rage3D Tweak. Once you installed it, you need to reboot your system and there will be four more tab under the advanced display. One of them will allow you to set OpenGL extensively. You can also call up the Rage3D Tweak by double click the icon on the taskbar.

hey guys -

http://www28.brinkster.com/chrisww1942/

here is another way to do it. just download the radlink program - which is pretty good in its own right - and it supplies alternate opengl/direct tabs that actually work! I just tested it and I was able to change the texture quality and the vertical sync. give it a shot!

One last tidbit on this issue:

As it turns out, the ATI drivers that come from IBM include a FireGL driver (which crashes) and a regular OpenGL driver. Look in your system32 directory and you'll find a atioglgl.dll and a atioglxx.dll. The one active by default is your FireGL OpenGL; the one that has xx is your regular.

The FireGL driver from the FireGL X1/Z1 was giving my problems, but I am using the alternate (atioglxx.dll -> rename to -> atioglgl.dll) with no ill effects. It has worked better for me. Just to let you folks know!

I'll offer my own littel update as well.

I tried playing CS again today on the laptop (this time on an internet server) and it would always crash just before the console roles up. The offending file was again the atioglgl.dll file. I could run a LAN game in OpenGL fine, but trying an online game crashed it everytime (very odd). I ended up settling for Direct3D again.

I'll go ahead and try esaleris' tip with the different OGL dll file and see what happens.
