CPU bottleneck?

my friend wants to buy a 6800GT as an upgrade. I told him that it would probably be better just to build a new system but he doesnt have the money. He has an athlon xp 2500+ and 512MBs of ram. He wants to know how much the cpu will affect the performance and if its worth it to buy the graphics card.

i coulda swore i just read a pc article about something like this related to Doom3, tryin to find it now.

edit: found it. this article shows how performance is affected when changing clockspeeds

I coulda sworn Anandtech just featured two huge articles about CPU scaling in Doom3 and graphics cards shootouts. :roll:

2500xP isn't such a good match with 6800GT.....3Dmark 2001 will be CPU limited..........Alot of the real world games out there are pretty much CPU limited too...
