CPU Coolers for X-Qpack2

I'm looking to build a new matx lan rig., My current is a 939 X-qpack. Thinking of going c2d for speed or am2 (I like amd mobos better). I just want to know what 775/am2 coolers people are using in their x-qpack2s.

I was looking at the Maxorb by thermaltake, but it doesnt LOOK like it would fit.

Please looking for actual users, or even suggestions of low-profile coolers.

I like this case, im not switching to another case.

I'm using a zalman 7000 and while I like it, from what I've seen they are not compatable with am2. Also, the designs with heatpipes seem to perform much better than a standard radial fin design. I see the Zalman 8000 around as well, and it would fit, but the numbers I've seen aren't that much better than a stock hsf.

I want a hsf that performs better, even if not a lot, maybe 5 degrees under load, than the stock hsf, and that looks cool, as I like a good looking machine.

I am aware the towers perform much better than the downward facing coolers, and am not opposed to one, if it fits in the x-qpack2.

corsiar nautius 500. With a HWLabs Blackice GTS 120x1 swaped out, and a D-tek Fusion. It fit very nicely on top of the q-pack, and would outcool any air heat sink on the market. It still might if she kept it for CPU only.


It did a very good job at cooling the cpu only. My friend had no complants until i stepped her up to a quadcore with new cooling/equiptment.

Then she didnt like the complicated h20 cooling on that rig. But i somehow managed to convince her that she wouldnt see a puddle on the floor.

IIRC, the height between the HD brace and the socket of the motherboard is about 66.1mm. So, the ThermalTake Orb was about the largest in height that can be installed with the brace and the removable tray in the way.

However, most guys cut the brace slightly enough to install larger type Heatsinks such as the Zalman 9500Cu HSF and Sycthe Ninja Tower heatsinks , etc. All you would need is a Dremel to cut the brace just slightly enough to mod it.

The Zalman 8700 would be ok, but for $60, you can do better by just modding the brace to accept a bigger heatsink for $35 rather than $60 from Zalman.

I saw someone put a 7700 with the thermalright revb am2 bracket. It was such a simple mod too. You may be able to keep your cooler!

BTW. Someone mentioned that they fitted an HR01 in a Qpack2. I would love to know if this was truly possible.

The key here is mobo selection. There's that ~70mm clearance if you want to mount the cooler before sliding it into the case. If the socket mount is near the "top" of the board, if you can install with the mobo slid in, there's ~100mm clearance to one of the crossbars. But if you find a mobo with a socket mount closer to the middle of the case, with the right positioning you can have next to unlimited clearance (~200mm).

That reviewer used a Biostar TA690G AM2 board and got lucky with the socket position.

Cutting the brace to add a larger heatsink isn't really new either as seen here.

I didn't even notice but that is the board I just ordered! Want the HR01 Plus now though.

Anyway the socket poition is only slightly lower than the norm which would be better in most circumstances.

The Maxorb should fit but you can cut a bit of the case to make it fit. The Zalman 770 DOES fit as should the 7500 I think is the new series.
