CPU Fan Error on bootup

hey guys, i recently had a problem with my pc, my PSU was going, and my friend had a computer he wasnt using anymore because he just built a new one. so i tried taking the PSU, but it was only for a 20 pin mobo, not 24, so i couldnt use my mobo. then i realized his cpu was 3.0 ghz, while mine was 1.8. so i took most of the parts out of it and put them in my case.

now when i boot up, after the bios screen (press del to enter setup screen) and the post, the computer starts to beep and says CPU Fan Error! Press F1 to continue. so i press F1 and boot into windows.

when i run speedfan, it says my cpu temp is way too high. it usually is around 50C at startup, then it will go down to about 49C when im just browsing the net or something, but when i do anything cpu intensive it can go up to about 59C. the cpu fan is hooked up properly and spins fine.

anyone know whats wrong here? does my cpu fan just suck? any recommendations on a good and cheap fan? thanks

its now climbing up to almost 60C, got up to 59C a min ago

If you say it's hooked up correctly, I'm wondering if you have it in the wrong spot? Perhaps you've plugged into a case fan header and are monitoring the wrong thing? The CPU fan error would usually be wrong the cpu fan plugged into the wrong header or plugged into a 4pin molex so the board thinks you have NO fan spinning at all and beeps to tell you plug it in. You would set that to DISABLE to stop beeping (cpu fan monitor disable I mean). I'm guessing maybe speedfan is looking at some wrong sensor or something. Touch your heatsink near the bottom close to board and see if it's hot. If it's fairly cool your heatsink and fan are likely doing the job needed.

They have 20-24pin converters. I try to avoid them but they have them. I had to use one on an old 510psu from PC Power and Cooling. No way I was tossing it just because the cable was wrong, I converted in hurry.

What do the temps so just sitting in bios at idle. IF that's a P4 3ghz it would be a hot chip anyway if you're comparing it to today's cores. So speedfan probably would be telling you the truth in which case I might buy a better fan (one you'd want to use later, like arctic cooling freezer pro 7, great for todays cores and any old s775 chips). $27.45 @ ewiz.com

P4's @3ghz+ are in a league of their own compared to Core2 64/45nm 3ghz chips.

What kind of fan? Is this a P4 3ghz?
