CPU Fan ???

Had a few parts sitting unused so I figured I'd put them to use. I put an ASUS mb P8Z77-V and Intel 3570k in a Corsair 200R case to see what I could get. Hit the power button and get a "CPU Fan 1" error on the screen. Shut down and checked the stock cooler's fan and it WAS plugged in to the proper header. I moved the fans plug into the CPU OPT header and got the same result. I've been doing my builds for 20 years now and I've never run across this problem before. Is it a mb or cpu fan problem ? I'm looking for a point or two in the right direction 'cause I'm stumped.

That's what I'm getting at. How many have run into a defective CPU fan from Intel or AMD? It's possible but I've never heard of it myself. I just hate buying a CM hyper or EVO, for example, just to find out that the problem is with the mb itself. I don't have a spare CPU fan lying around and I'd rather not tamper with a working system to steal a fan. I looked at the ASUS website and this particular board isn't even listed any more although the cheaper ones are still displayed. Perhaps this model was problematic? I'd hate to make the trip to MC for a fan and find out that the board is the culprit.

Does the fan spin at all? If not, does it spin if you connect it to a different fan header on the motherboard?

If it doesn't spin when connected to different plugs, then the fan is probably dead.

If it will spin in one but not another then you may have a bad CPU fan header on the motherboard. Some motherboards will let you disable this warning. If yours has the option, then you can just use the fan on a different header.

I couldn't get the fan to spin in either fan header which probably points to the fan itself IMO. What bothered me was going online and finding out that ASUS removed this particular board from it's listing. After reading the latest comments on NewEgg about this board my suspicion is that the board is problematic. I'll go ahead and purchase a CPU fan no matter what but I have a sneaking feeling that my 3570K will be moving to a new home.

Cheapest option would be just to go on eBay and purchase another Intel socket 1155 heatsink - I've seen brand new ones there for less than $10 brand new many times.

Just a quick update. Moved same CPU and fan to a Gigabyte Z77X-UD3H board and everything's working as designed. Thanks for your help and suggestions.
