CPU heat problem

I have an old build that recently the CPU is running very hot and shutting down when doing anything processor intensive.

CPU is an AMD 64 X2 4200+: 2200 MHz - it is running at stock speed

Have cleaned and reseated the heatsink / fan for CPU and its running around 39-42 C at idle, jumps up to 56-58 C very fast under moderate load - could it be just the fact that the CPU is getting old that is causing the heat issues?

Pretty much can't play any games on it because it gets too hot and shuts down, thankfully Mobo has overtemp shut-off function so it still works, but thinking it might be toast anyway.

Any input would be appreciated.

What about the vid card fan and mobo heatsinks? check the power supply fan as well. 60C is not hot and should not shut down. Check all the system components.

I think it is probably the PSU that is the problem, and it doesn't seem likely that the vid card overheating would cause the system to shut down completely. Need to make sure that the mobo chipset fan is running fine, if it is then that pretty much narrows it down to the PSU. I have a PSU I can get out of another box, it's only 350 watt though, running a 450 now, do you think it would be sufficient with the setup below.

Overall system build:
CPU:AMD 64 X2 4200+: 2200 MHz - it is running at stock speed
Vid card: 9400 GT 512
Ram: 2 gig
extras: 2 300 gig sata drives, 1 DVD RW

I had it running around 115 C under load without issues. But when I put it under a heavier load it ran fine for about 30 minutes then shut down again, wasn't able to check temp when it shut down.

Appreciate the input.

I think that a 350W PSU would be fine for testing that system out. However, I'm not sure that I would run it with a 350W long-term. Also, if it were really running at 115 degrees C then it would be permanently ruined. Chances are that the CPU's thermometer is broken.
