CPU thermal pastes

Hi all

I read somewhere that the temps of a cpu drop few celsius after around 7-8 days after thermal grease is applied. Is this true? I'm just wondering because I switched my cpu to a new mb and the load temps seems around 4-6 celsius higher than before. ( from 42 -> 48 celsius with E6300@stock speed + stock cooler)

This is the first time I had to manually apply thermal paste so little bit worried I might have done it wrong.

What paste did you use? The set time really only applies to AS5, no others should show a measurable improvement over time. I'd say it's possible if no likely you may have applied too much.

In my experience, applying a small amount such as a small grain of rice to the CPU and letting the heatsink
smash it flush when mounting works best. Covering about 80% of the CPU in a very thin layer.

Apparently over greasing can cause insulation, as it is only meant to fill in the microscopic gaps between the
heatsink and CPU surface, not add significant material between the two.

I've also heard that with AS5 there is a curing period where it will work better with time, but
I have no experience using AS5.

Edit - typos abound

Zalman ZM-STG1. It is just weird that on the other hand my idle temps are much lower, around 30 celsius while before they were 36 celsius.

wait, idles went down and loads went up? I would check fan throttling if you have it enabled at all. sounds like the fan isn't spinning up to the same rpm on the new motherboard as it was on the old board at load.

Checked, it is spinning at the same speed as before.

Did anything else in the system change? Did you get a higher overclock on the new board or did you change out case fans or case or memory or ANYTHING else?

I installed more memory at the same time...can that affect that much?

yup, the extra memory puts a greater strain on the PWM and can pretty easily increase temps a couple of *C. Especially on a board with only 4 stage PWM.

Okay, that explains. Thanks a lot.
