CPU upgrade help needed! No-boot!

I have a Dell dimension 8100 machine with a 1.3 ghz p4 socket 423 processor. I purchased a p4 2.0ghz socket 478 and a 423-478 adapter. I installed the new one and tried to boot but nothing happened. My specs say that I can use up to a 2.0ghz. I have not been able to determine the exact mobo I have but it is Intel chipset 850 according to Dell's website. I just upgraded to winxp pro from win2000 pro and the first step was to update the bios. I am not sure which one I upgraded to though.

Can someone help me out?

You did not write down the old bios number or the new one either? Did you back up your old bios?
Failure to do this things can and will cause you a load of problems, mostly never being able to boot the machine again without a new bios chip.
