ssup guys??

i wanna know if the gpu is being bottlenecked by the cpu or vice-versa???
like while playing fear or farcry or oblivion???

any help would be appreciated
so that i will overclock either my gpu or cpu accordingly

hav got an

3000+(@1.8GHz) coupled with a
6800gs(@425/1100) and
1Gb kingston value ram (512 X 2)..

lets see here. the bottleneck is obviously the 6800gs, the 6800 series is quickly losing its ability to stand up to today's newest games. i would recommend getting a used 7800/x1800 series or better video card. THEN take that 3000+ and OC it to about 2.5-2.6 which it should be able to reach easily. Lastly u might wanna grab another gig o RAM for an extra speed boost. just a new vcard oand OCing the proc will help u out GREATLY tho so go for those first.

I think the 3000+ is more of a bottleneck than the 6800GS, which is often faster than the 6800GT. OCing to 2.5-2.6 should definitely fix that. My old 3000+ winchester did 2.55GHz pretty easily, i would assume yours should do somthing similar without too much fuss.

As for the video card, yes, it's getting a little long in the tooth, but its over twice as fast as a 6600GT, which i used to use for oblivion and it ran fine at 1024x768. Personally I'd recommend waiting for the directX10 cards before upgrading again. I'd say the 6800GS should be able to last you till september or whenever they come out.

And finally, the gig of memory is almost certainly NOT a bottleneck in this system. Aside from battlefield 2, i have yet to see a single game requiring 2GB for good performance. Farcry and oblivion do not particularly benefit from extra ram, and with that system, assuming you kept the old sticks, you'd have to run them at a 2T command rate which drops performance (if you have a winchester, you'll also need to drop to DDR333).

thx 4 the prompt reply guys...

as far as oc'ing the proc goes i dont think i'll be able to much abt it as i hav value ram,
i cant oc it much wothout increasing the freq of the ram....
how much freq can it handle???(stock is 200 X 2 = ddr 400)

any pointers??

You can always run a divider to keep your RAM speed near DDR400 as you increase your HTT speed. (Usually you'll do that by changing the listed RAM speed in your BIOS to DDR333 or DDR266, depending on how low you want to run the divider - generally lowering it to DDR333 will be sufficient unless you want to run HTT speeds of over 260 or so).

Agreed. I have a 6800GT overclocked to 420/1100, and a fast processor (x2 4400). The 6800 just isn't cutting it on Oblivion, and even Battlefield 2 is laggy at higher resolutions.

go to the cpu forum here on anadtech and there is a sticky post called the athlon 64 OC guide. tells u everything u need to know. as for value RAM, it is by far the best bang for your buck. I am runnin Kingston Value RAM right now (stock DDR 400 3-3-3-8) at DDR 450 2-3-3-6 1t. Just usin some all copper heat spreaders to dissapate the heat. value RAM tends to OC bery well so dont be held back by that.

Unless you run all those games at 800x600 with low settings, your bottleneck is the 6800gs. Especially in games like FEAR and Oblivion, which put a lot of stress on even the high end cards.

Your bottleneck is no doubt 6800GS. However, it's fun to overclock the processor regardless Also fear doesn't chop as much with 2 gigs of ram.

I'd overclock both of them a bit....and don't be afraid to push that Kingston Value Ram. I had two 512's in my rig a while ago, and I could get them to ddr436 @ 2.5-3-2-5 timings, all at 2.65v! They could go higher if you relaxed the timings a bit as well. The pci-e version of the 6800gs can oc incredibly well too, so give it a shot. I've got the agp 6800gs, and I can only get it to 422/1124, but I've got 16 pipes!

GL, and I would definetly wait for the next gen everything. (DX10, AM2, Conroe, PPU, etc.)
