crappy win2k install. help.

Installing Win2k and right after I start the "boot from cd" and it
installs some of the drivers and whatnot, it just freezes at the blue screen that says "Setup is starting Windows 2000". HArd drive light just stays illuminated. i waited about 5 minutes or so. nothing!

Machine has a tyan trinity 100AT mobo and an amd 400MHz cpu. ibm 20GB hard drive,
any suggestions?

i don't remember how long my setup took at that point but i do remember that along the way there were spots where it seemed like it froze...so i got frustrated and kept redoing it...but then finally i had some patience and walked away and things went smoothly. try giving it some time... sometimes the cd doesn't spin up right away or it spins up and spins down a lot (does it sound like it's reading the cd?)...also, do you have all the cards removed except for the video card?

try to boot it from a floppy, and then istall it manually (type in "setup", "install", "winnt" in the root dir) do you use ATA HD? I had same problem when I had mY ATA in ATA slot in ASUS a7v133, I swithed in back to IDE worked just fine

Well, I left it for about 45 minutes.
Then I formatted and installed 98se and tried to upgrade. it froze at thew exact same point. I am not sure if there's a third party controller that needs to be installed first. I did find the 4in1 drivers on the manufacturers website. SHould I try again and reinstall them? SHould I flash the bois?

update:

I put a working hard drive with win2k already installed intot he box. It just keeps rebooting right after the first "Starting Windows 2000" screen.

ANy other sugestions?

i've had this happen with bad RAM.
do you have any other memory that you could try?
do you get any error messages or is it a freeze?

It's a freeze. But I put 98 on it and it works fine. Do you think that RAM could work in one OS and not the other?

win98 is much more tolerant with hardware anomalies than win2k is. Had a computer that wouldn't install win2k either...found out that i got a semi defective part but would work fine in win98.

Give me some examples of this so I know where to start. I already took everything out of the pc except for the video card, ram, mobo, processor, cdrom, floppy. It still does the same thing.

Pertaining to the other hard drive I tried that already had the OS loaded on it: What would make it just continuosly reboot?
