crash and bsod after overclocking 7850?

I used to run my powercolor 7850 at 1000 Mhz GPU clock and 4800 MHz mem at 1.138v with stock cooler, I just installed an arctic cooling fan which keeps the temperature much lower so I thought I'd try overclocking more. I increased the GPU clock to 1100 MHz and memory to 5000 MHz, I played far cry 3 and it crashed with weird colors on screen. I increased the voltage to 1.198v, I played battlefield 4 for about 15 minutes no problems. Then I played Far Cry 3 and after 5 minutes I got a bluescreen. then I upped the voltage to 1.205v and this time I played for like 40 minutes then it bluescreened.

whats up with that? I saw lots of others getting like 1250 MHz/5800 MHz with 1.125v.

Some chips are better than others, it's the "silicon lottery." Sometimes a GPU looks like it's stable in a game but it's not. Sometimes it's so unstable that it crashes immediately. Sometimes it's barely stable in one game, but another game uses more of the GPU and thus crashes it more. Also, GPUs and CPUs deteriorate with wear and tear, so that after a while you will need to increase volts even more just to keep it stable.

If you haven't done it already go into CCC and push your power tune slider all the way up. Also might want to increase the fan speed. Your card could be getting too hot. Try again. If it still crashes try reducing the mem O/C. Almost all 7850 GPU's (there's always exceptions) will run 1100MHz.

Also, keep a temperature gauge running, like Afterburner, so you can confirm that the temperatures are within reason. Also, maybe your GPU temperature is OK, but your VRM temperature is wacky or something. Good to watch all temp sensors to see if your pattern always happens at the same temperature, or if there is some predictability here. Maybe the heatsink cooler needs to be reapplied because your temperatures are excessive for those voltages/speeds (which you can understand better after watching the temperature chart over time).

I've had four 7800 series cards. None went past 1150MHz, and my MSI 7850 Twin Frozr would only do 1075.

Frankly, widespread reports of 7850s regularly doing 1250 were either false or poorly tested.

how do I measure VRM temperatures? GPU-Z only seems to measure the GPU temp, which is only about 60C so it is not overheating.
