Creating your own Webserver. How to?

I was wondering if anyone could direct me to a good site that would have a guide about how to set up a webserver. Anyone?

Yes, i have looked other places, but often the best guides are not the easiest to find.

extreemly dumb question..but...would one still need Windows 2000 or a server version of Windows to run a Web server or is something like Apache enuff?

Apache is enough, and it will run on both Windows an Linux.

Yeah people might confuse Win2000 Server and Web Server because of the
Word Server. Network Server and Web server is not the same thing.

It really depends on what you like to do. You have to define what you would
Like to do WebSite wise, and then look for best fit your need.

As an example: I run few Sites one of them is running Win98 and a simple 156KB
Server application.

You can also run a full Apache Server on Win98 too. I am not necessarily trying to advocating the use of
Win98, just to make a point.

It is a typical Techie mistake to start with the need of platform and software rather then the need of the Site.

If you are looking to do this for a learning experience, or for your own cheap web server, then I highly suggest you go get an old desktop, 200mhz - 500mhz is fast enough, and install Linux (without gui) and Apache. You can also install any other extensions. Mandrake, SUSE, Redhat, Debian all have the packages pre-setup for you.

Anyway, for a HOWTO, try googling for stuff like "apache howto" or "linux apache howto" or "redhat apache howto". you get the idea. there are lots of howto docs on the net for various linux projects.

An alternative to Apache is Xitami. I have it running in the background on two WIN98 machines (166MHz and 233MHz) and a WinXPpro (500MHz). Have names thru Dynamic DNS. One is on a fixed IP DSL circuit, the other two are on dynamic DSL (PPPoE) and use a program I got thru DynDNS to update my address when it changes.

Tried messin around with DDNS, could never get it working quite write, not that it matters tho, got like 1gb of websapce and domain reg, for like 8bucks a month.

May try to set it up again tho, I want to share some TV episodes i've accumulated over the years (If this of course isn't illegal?)
