I just lost my entire documents drive, which was setup on a RAID 5 array. The latest backup I have is from the end of June, so it shouldn't be too bad, but damn I lost a lot of pictures and music. Ugh, that sucks. Oh well. Restoring is always worse than backup up. I'll have to remember that.

Yes... And I thought it was rather bulletproof. Will have to be more careful when installing relays into the power system. hehehehe

Doesn't failure of a RAID-5 array require two simultaneous drive failures? My understanding is that if only a single drive fails, the array can still be recovered (hence the purpose of RAID-5).

That is true. It RAID 5 requires a two-drive failure to go critical, which is what happened. I don't know how, and I'm a bit weary about restoring stuff to the array again... I don't know if it was the disks, the controller, or a power problem. I believe it was the later though. So I get to see what happens.

Sounds like tas taught his computer the meaning of the word 'overvolt'

Nah. I actually ended up testing my secondary PSU's short circuit protection... Ooops.
Tas.

EDIT: It works!! (the short circuit protection that is...)

What controller do you use, if you don't mind me asking?

Awesome. I was tempted to go the SCSI route, but the size of them always turned me off... I had a 6X IDE Promise SX6000 setup for a while, but I migrated to SATA now... And this has bene quite a pain in the arse so far... Never had this much trouble with RAID before. Oh well though. Yeehah.

Pics?? I'm in the process of redoing all of my wiring. Fvcking tools from SVC broke, so I can't do my power supplies yet, but I've got all the mobo cables done... If you think the wiring is bad with a power supply, you should see two!!

Actually RAID5 needs only ONE drive to go critical, degraded, defunct, etc. If you lose ANOTHER then you need to restore backups from tape or whatever.

It's also important to realise while the rebuild (from either hotspare or disk you swap out) is taking place another failure will cause data loss.

I remember many times walking by racks of netfinity servers with the attention light glowing and thinking "gee whiz if those are R5 logicals someone needs to fix that".

I've been considering adding a SATA RAID 5 card to my PC. Any good suggestions? I'm really not sure what to look for in a good RAID controller. Newegg had one that was only $86 not too long ago, but they don't seem to carry it anymore, and now their only cards are $200+.

I don't know what happened. I think there might be something wrong with channel 3 of my controller. I'm going to mess around with it, and see what happens. As far as recommendations, I've enjoyed Promise controllers a lot so far... Still not sure about RaidCore yet, and I won't fork up the money for a 3Ware.

QUestion on RAID 5.

I have a SCSI setup with 4 drives. One of them failed 2 days ago. I called IBM, and guess how they wanted to replace it. NO JOKE, 1064 American dollars. For 1 18GB hard drive. over 1000 dollars!!!

So my question is, do i need to replace the drive with the exact model, or can i plug any drive into there and let the RAID rebuild itself?

As long as it's the same capacity and interface you should be fine. Matching spindle speed helps too.

What's the model number of the drive? Lots of vendors have these in stock and much cheaper than a kilobuck.
