Every now and then my monitor will start to emit an extremely high pitched whine that drives me crazy! I did some searching on google and it seems some monitors do exibit this type of behavior but near as I can tell there's no solution to this.

Monitor in question is a Mitsubishi Diamond Pro 2060u (was bought used).

I had the same problem....only solution was to hit it really good on the base (front bottom portion...by the control panel)...that fixed it for awhile

Just tried it, didn't help. If I turn it off for about 30 seconds and back on it fixes it for about 10 minutes or so but that's probably hard on the monitor

I asked this question a long time back. I believe they said that it had something to do with the capacitors, and what not inside the monitor. Mine never stopped doing it. TO solve it, get a CRT. Otherwise unless you are a pro at soldering and know exactly what component in the monitor is making the noise, you will have to live with it.

Another way to get it to stop temporarily is to change the refresh rate.

My Sony Trinitron started to whine and I hated it so bad that I just bought another monitor. But a few months later I plugged it in to an older system and the noise was gone. I think it might of not liked the fact that I always ran it at its highest resolution and refresh rate.

So my advice is try lowering the resolution and refresh and see what happens. If it doesn't help then I think you are due for a new monitor.

P.S. I got a samsung 997DF 19"CRT for $175 shipped and is an AWESOME monitor. If you aren't ready to leap into LCDs then this is your best buy.

Yeah, I had been running it at 1280x960@100Hz. I've got it backed down to 1280x960@85Hz and we'll see how well it does at that, though I belive I've had it as low as 1280x1024@75Hz and it still did it. I've only had the monitor a year (used, manufactured end 2001) and its been doing this a couple months. I thought origionally it was coming from something inside the computer (and my hard disk does whine but not quite as loud). I'd be hard pressed to convince my parents that my $330 monitor needs replacing already... Though I may get a job soon and be able to save up for it myself. Also I just did a major (needed) overhaul to the tune of $630 to the computer itself.

Well I'll see what messing with the refresh rates does, but I won't go below 75Hz.

Capacitor whine. Do a search maybe its recalled or they will replace the parts that are causing the problem for free. Dont tell them its used.

my monitor does the same thing. honestly the only solution is to hit it. for me, hitting it on the top works best.

Could whatever inductors/transformers are in there as well; the frequency they run at makes them buzz due to mechanical motion of the windings. If there are big, open inductors inside you could maybe put some hot glue on 'em to muffle it a bit.... who knows, I just thought of that now.
