All of Crucial's PC133 memory is 7.5ns, whether it's CAS 2 or 3 ... the CAS rating has nothing to do with the speed rating. Crucial did at one time sell some 7ns parts, but those were their initial double-sided PC133 modules.

I just got my ram today from Crucial. Great service. I installed my new m/b yesterday but still am running on old chip. Right now I have 384MB of PC100 running a Celeron 566@850 (8.5x100). Should I bother installing the ram? Can i have 2 PC100 and 1 PC133? Should I just keep the PC133 in the box and install it when I get a new cpu. Speaking of CPU, in light of the price drops, what do you guys recommend in terms of the best bang for the buck. I'd really like to break that 1 Gig mark preferbly through o/c. I also want it to be worthwhile, like o/c more than 50 mhz or something. I hope you guys can help.

If you are running 100fsb, you should be able to mix PC100 and PC133 sticks together, no sweat.

If you were to up your fsb to 133, you might not be able to run the PC 100 in there also. You could get luck though, and have your PC 100 Ram run at 133. A lot of it does. Usually at a higher latency, which means a LITTLE bit slower speed for the whole group of memory.

But the higher rated stuff is fully downward compatible with the lower rated stuff, as long as it is the same general type of memory (168 pin DIMM SDRAM).

RAM is definately a subjective topic. I mean it's got to be good and all for the technophiles to dig it, but I've been checking out the RAM threads for a while now and it seems that any Mosel Vitelic RAM is pretty much guaranteed to be barn burning good. Not that Crucial or Mushkin or whatever is bad, but Mosel customers are consistently blown away by the performance. I've heard mostly satisfied Crucial customers too but every once in a while there's someone who is disappointed by the speed or o/c capabilities of it. Like I said, it's a polarizing subject for some but I've decided to get 512 of 7ns P133 Mosel Vitelic. Tons of great reviews and satisfied customers can't be wrong. Anybody know who Mosel Vitelic is? I've heard the name Apacer thrown around in the same camp. Where's the stuff made?

I think that what Mosel does is specify, pick and test memory, rather than make it. They may make/assemble the dimm modules, not sure. Probably farm that out to on of the jobbers like Jabil Circuit if they do.

I think that some Mosel memory is probably Micron, just like all of Crucials. It is possible that they have a higher cut off point for testing and qualifying memory. E.g. 150mhz cas 2. Some Crucial will make that, some won't.

For Althon buyers, only the KT133a board owners (FSB 133/266) should even begin to think about this. Really then it is only the extreme overclockers amoung them. And FSB overclockers at that.

In Intel land, the only way of overclocking the processor is by upping the fsb. Therefore, memory's top fsb speed is crucial for an intel overclocker. When you start to over clock 10% and more beyond the fsb setting, however, you are very likely to create system instability with things like disk drive controllers, raid controlers, sound cards, some lan cards, etc.

In Athlon land, the primary way of overclocking is the multipler unlock. Upping the fsb a bit is a tweak. I don't plan to run my fsb in my soon to build system beyond ~143 - 146 myself. I want my baby rock solid.

Crucial 133 cas 2 will run cas2 at that nearly always. I'll leave the 150-160 fsb bragging rights / instability to someone else.

Mosel makes their chips and DIMMs. From their website:

"Mosel Vitelic designs, manufactures, and markets dynamic RAMs (DRAMs), Flash and high-speed static RAMs (SRAMs) for world-wide markets. The Company provides DRAMs for specific applications, such as PC graphics, with unique performance attributes, including fast access time and memory organizations that are optimized for graphic acceleration applications. Mosel Vitelic also assembles its DRAMs into SIMMs (single-in-line memory modules) and DIMMs (dual-in-line memory modules).

Mosel Vitelic main memory DRAMs are manufactured at ProMOS Technology Inc., in Hsinchu, Taiwan, using advance CMOS, 0.17 micron process technology. ProMOS is a joint venture 8-inch fab between Mosel Vitelic and Siemens AG. The specialty DRAMs are manufactured in the 6-inch fab, also located in Hsinchu, using 0.35 micron technology. All DRAMs are assembled and tested at ChipMOS, a Mosel Vitelic subsidiary."

MV is good,
but I still prefer Japanese stuff first, american and european second, korean and taiwanese third.

here in US, Crucial is so cheap now, no way to consider generic with Nec, Hitachi, Toshiba, Siemens, Samsung, Goldstar, Hyundai chips. I used to go to computer show to buy such, now I'm only buying from Crucial. Over-priced brand name like Kingston (regular, not valueram), Corsair, Viking have never been in my consideration.

CAS 2 is better due to reduced latency. I also just recieved an e-mail from Crucial today:

Take a look at the great pricing available now on
unbuffered, nonparity, 168-pin DIMMs!

32MB PC100 SDRAM.....$ 24.29
64MB PC100 SDRAM.....$ 27.89
128MB PC100 SDRAM....$ 53.99
256MB PC100 SDRAM....$ 107.99

Prices are even lower if you use the webpromo url.

In order to take advantage of Cas2, you need to go into your mobo's bios and set the memory setting to that. The default is usually Cas 3. Also enable "four way interweaving".

Nice little performance boost.
