Definitely. The entertainers on ships (musicians, magicians, comedians, etc.) have the best jobs. Not only do they get to perform, but they are usually allowed to mingle with the regular guests, use all the ship's facilities and amenities, and can disembark the ship at most of the stops.

that would be cool but i am not a musician or comedian....Ive always considered being a dealer cause I love poker and am really really good at dealing (just about as good as a casino dealer) but they would require me to have experience in that.

I had a friend work on one, the good thing is they got free room and board. But they did work about 125 hours a week. She said that the majority of the people working on the cruise ship were from very poor countries. She waited tables on the ship btw.

And they had to wear a special shirt and were not aloud to mingle with non employees

I think they started work at 5am and ended at about midnight. So about 16-18 hours a day.

One of my old roomates lives down in miami. He is in charge of the theatre productions on all of Royal Carribeans ships. He spent a year on a ship as a stage manager before he took the office job at headquarters.

did he like it?

He had fun for the year, but he said it gets old really quickly. And he was an officer, so he had all the good perks (like his own cabin, etc...).

Don't take this the wrong way but are you an average white dude? On most cruises it's non-Americans serving the drinks and interacting with the people. I think there's something subconscious that people don't want to be served a drink by Joe from Albany when they're on a cruise, they want it from Jose from Buenos Aires. I'm sure there's still jobs for your average white dude given the amount of recruiting they do on college campuses but I wouldn't expect to be mixing drinks poolside.

The reason you do not see many caucasians working on the cruise ship is because not many want to work 120+ hours a week. That is why many of the employees are from poor countries.

And it is not 120+ hours of sitting behind a desk but 120 hours of powerwalking and lifting things.

Do you really think you're that good? I personally wouldn't think about being a dealer without some experience.. I've seen some drunks get awfully mad when a dealer fouls up.

If you don't know about something and only hear rumors, don't talk about it.

How is that a rumor? At least once a year there is a story about how hundreds of people on some cruise all got sick.

Right, I forgot that they are sea-worthy operating rooms.

no they are not, but don't say when the entire ship gets sick.
Out of curiosity, how many cruises have you personally been on?

I've been on a couple, why which line do you own?

OBTW as far as commenting on items that one is not sure about; that would eliminate 90% of ATOT threads and 99.9% of YAGTs.

All i am saying is that ships and cruise lines take a great many precautions to insure the safty and health of their pax. The reason people get sick on board is because people come on board sick, the spread their germs, other people do not wash their hands properly and they become sick. Cruise lines sanitize things all the time, there are antibacterial stations all over.... Its the passangers that make themselves sick.

Actually, let me clarify, I'd rather have it from Pietra from Buenos Aires but my point remains the same.

They probably wouldn't hire you. Cruse ship companies outsource a lot of the casino operations, and the dealers they hire are usually from Eastern European casinos. Your best bet is to try to get a job in the hospitality dept (think activities staff) since you don't qualify for music/entertainment jobs and you don't want to be doing food. Most cruise ships staff themselves from developing countries where they pay less and can work people a lot more. I think however that NCL has a Hawaii cruise that doesn't stop in another country which means they have to have a 100% American staff, so there are probably tons of opportunities on that specific cruise ship.

It helps if you have hospitality industry experience. You'll be working more than you'll be enjoying the experience. The one thing you get out of it is plenty of free lodging and food. If you can work for a foreign line, you'll do the best with bringhome pay since you may get a break on taxes. Be sure to research that.

If you're young and don't have a car payment or anything that might keep you tied down, go for it. I'm sure you'll meet a lot of cool people and have a great time.

Check out NCL which has 3 (I think) ships that sail through the islands in Hawaii under the U.S. Flag. Because the ships fly the U.S flag they are exempt from the Jones Act and do not have to make a port of call at an international location and I do believe they have to follow all the US labor laws. As a result I think the working conditions are considerably less strenous and pay better then the ships that fly an international flag and sail through the Caribbean (sp?). I just got back from a cruise on their newest ship (Pride of Hawaii I think?) and all the crew members were young americans, probably much like yourself. I do recall hearing a crew member say they work about 70-80 hours a week and get paid overtime, they also have days off since I saw many of them disembark with the vacationers.

Yes indeed. I was worried at some point, I noticed she wasn't around again (would have nominated for the sexiest person thread, but alas, I had no pics and thus could not), and when I searched for her ID, it wasn't found. But I had noticed a user Rubycon, who was posting Putfile.com links, and was uncannily knowledgeable about damn near anything. Hmm....

spoke to a guy at length while we were on a ship... he said it's months away from home (obviously) and if you don't have anything/anyone tying you down (significant other / close family)... it's a great deal.
