But how the heck do you start using them (making others do) for trading? I mean they have no value whatsoever. It's just pixels...

Usually, people give some of their altcoins away to get a quick user base. Then they convince (or bribe) an exchange to allow them be traded for other coins with an established value.

If you can convince just one person that 5,000 AnandtechCoins (for an example) are worth one Litecoin, you now have an exchange rate that can be used for other transactions.

Thank you.

Does anyone have cpuminer 2.3.2 somewhere? I cannot download it from Sourceforge because it's flagged as a virus! (apparently because of all the botnet mining)

Any point getting a single r9 270x for mining?

Its a decent step up from my gtx 470 and about the only thing I can find in stock local. I figured I could mine until it pays for itself and then use it for gaming. No clue how long it would take to cover the cost though.

I had to do a lot of tweaking to get my dual 7870s to perform like they performed in individual rigs.

I found the best results when I take just about everything out of cgminer bat file and just leave the intensity on there (which I can change on the fly).

Here is what my bat file currently looks like:

setx GPU_MAX_ALLOC_PERCENT 100
setx GPU_USE_SYNC_OBJECTS 1
pause
cgminer --scrypt -o stratum+tcp://us3.wemineltc.com:3334 -u nwo75200.2 -p 1010 -I 17

Try to take all other commands out of cgminer (you might want to leave your card clock speeds in there). CG miner is pretty good at adjusting the rest of the settings over time. I was initially getting only about 300kH/s per card and after a while it climbed back up to the normal 375kH/s per card.

Thanks again. Maybe I'll just have to do some experimenting.

Ok, so now I'm paranoid again about my earnings.

So my GUI is reporting a hash rate of 575 kh/s, while coinotron was only reporting <150 kh/s, so I chalked that up as the pool's number being inaccurate for some reason and that GUI should be correct.

However, I looked at the change in my confirmed rewards reported by coinotron:

At 8:48am it was 5.86916021
At 2:28pm it was 5.86633071
= change of .0171705
Thus, to estimate a daily amount, I just multiplied the difference by 4 (6 hr period)
= .068682

According to dustcoin.com, a 575 kh/s rate should equate to about .294 coins/day.
So then I'm not earning even close to that (less than 1/4!), which leads me to believe that coinotron's hash rate may be correct.

Are my calculations correct? Is there any other way I can verify my results?

What's the ratio of rejected shares and HW error shares versus accepted shares. It could be that with your settings, the mining process is generating a huge number of invalid shares.

I've decided to build a small 5 Mhash litecoin rig. It's not working up to full capacity yet as one of the GPUs is glitchy and is awaiting RMA.

But, it looks like it's going to pay for itself by Christmas.

Where are the HDDs?

What CPU/mobo are you using? I'm thinking of building one of those similar to what you got since it annoys me that I can only fit 2 GPUs in my case towers.

There aren't any.

The rest of the hardware is the cheapest haswell system with 3 16x (mechanical) slots I could find.

Could you please enlighten a newbie like myself how I can setup a similar mining configuration (only one) without using a HDD and all the other junk?

Holy crap I feel sorry for your GPU squashed between two others, no room to breath... mining coins put so much stress on GPUs as it is.

Also, free (actually making $$) heating in your room, nice!

Where do you live?

A 270x is a little step up from a 7870 (at least in mining hashrate performance). 7870s are still available online at places like newegg and cost a lot less than a 270x.

If you are going to mine it let's say 20 hours per day (since you will use it for gaming) it should pay itself off within a month @ the current LTC price/difficulty and assuming you spend around $200 on your video card.

Don't they make cable extenders/risers for the PCI-E x16 port, so you don't have to cram the second card between two other cards?

I'm in the US, I went by Worst Buy to see what they had. A XFX Double D r9 270x would be about $240 out the door. I'm not playing many games atm so I could mine 24/7.

The Powercolor 7870 on newegg for $169 AR doesn't look too bad.

Can someone post their 290/290X scrypt mining config parameters?

Just wondering how I'm doing. I'm getting about 830kH/s at 950/1250 with a 290 using cgminer 3.7.2. Hash rate seems to go DOWN if I up the clock speed or mem speed.

I was mining bitcoins last December but then the price crashed.

I currently have 0.07394538 coins which have some value today at least.

Wow! Current value shows as $90 and climbing. Makes me wish I would have stuck it out longer than the couple of days that I did.

How can I cash them out with the least hassle?

Thanks!

Thanks! Those are the settings I am using as well so it looks like I'm bang on what it should be. I tried using the settings given in that link you provided a couple of pages ago where he claimed to get 900 kh/s with 1000/1350, but my hash rates seem to go down when I try those settings.

Holy crap, I just found out one bitcoin is worth slightly over $1000. That's insane! I thought it's on some really low value due to the major thefts lately, but...
(of course I don't really know anything about all this, just saying)

Holding until it hits $100

Why stop there? Bitcoins at over 1,000 now, and I fully expect it to hit $10,000 end of next year.

So LTC ~$40 now, it should hit ~$400 end of next year as well. I have faith in Bitcoin (because so many people invest so heavily in it, as well as massive server farms, china and india onboard, big bucks are at play!), and LTC price is linked to it.
