Yeah it looks like I may hold off on this game till the next big Nvidia refresh anyway. I am getting a 360 sometime in Nov so it should keep me busy for months to come.

Try DX10 which is the showcase for this game

One thing I tried was setting shadows and post processing to medium and everything else to very high. Shadows look pretty good still, the blur effect isn't as stressful and the game runs at around 30fps in DX10 this way.

Yeah, I did the same. Dropping shadows to medium increased performance noticeably, and shadows still looked great (i.e; soft and subtle; not jagged and unnatural).

The big disappointment I hoped it wouldnt be.

1 - Performance: Either you guys are lying or I've got serious driver problems. I have 2 gigs of RAM, a dual-core A64 and a 7900GTX. Even at medium settings and 1024x768 the frame rate is horrid, and it seems like it plays for 10-12 seconds and then freezes for 5 -6 seconds.
Not good at all considering the medium settings arent even that pretty.

2 - Controls: From my viewpoint it seems this game was clearly designed for consoles from the ground up. The special abilities access is REALLY annoying, and the default keys for most things are poorly placed. I will have to figure out something better on my own.

3 - Gameplay: Suprisingly lacking. I seriously hope I dont have to buy the full thing just to find the halfway decent levels in the middle of the game.
Again, since it seems it was desinged for consoles first, I shouldnt be totally amazed that graphics came first and everything else was an afterthought.

This was it folks, this was the one. If Crysis sucked ass I was going to give up games for good and get a wife and a kid and a white picket fence and a fucking minivan.
I have the good sense to wait until the full retail comes out and maybe even one patch. If it still looks like a classic "form over function" (the new standard in video games) I will be done for good.

I first posted a while ago when I started downloading and havent read all 143 posts yet, hopefully I didnt start a flame war with a crapload of people.

Well, I hope I dont meet Zenoth in a dark alley, I'm pretty sure he wouldnt let me out alive.
I got the special nVidia drivers, we'll see if they help. Will run Driver Cleaner first.

1) you've got problems i'm running the same settings on an X850XT and it's fine.

2) i'm pretty quick with the suit powers. personally, i think the mod menu would be horrid on consoles - too many buttons/directions.

3) crysis was designed for PC only. they've said "if we put crysis on consoles, it wouldn't be crysis anymore" due to console hardware limitations (ie, not enough memory)

shortylickens, I think you have problems, I was running on a 4200x2 stock performance @ 2.2GHz 512MB Cachex2, x1900xt, 2GB DDR2-800, and I had a res of 1680x1050 and no AA, everything else on medium. The demo ran and looked superb...I mean...I don't care at this point if it's not max'd out, but hell, it looked great. My problem is that my GPU kept glitching, I think, because I'd have some pixelated streak in the sky. I just DL'ed the new ATi drivers, so it sounds like a GPU problem. I also vacuumed my computer, and scrubbed at all the dusty parts.

CoD4 has the same issues, where it looks like this:

Thats all well and good fellas, but I already had my xbox 360 controller plugged in (for Test Drive Unlimited). When the game started it found the controller immediately and correctly identified the type. When the game started all the help popups showed just the gamepad controls, and (sad as it seems) they were definitely organized with gamepads in mind. I couldnt disable the gamepad so I actually had to unplug it just to get the tutorial for the keyboard and mouse.
But the keyboard controls are set up poorly and the abilies wheel reminded me of a poor version of the SNES Secret of Mana.

As for the performance issues:
I cleaned the old drivers and installed the special NVIDIA Crysis drivers.

Nothing.

Everything else runs smooth, in fact Far Cry runs better than ever. Max everything and still get excellent frame rates. Supreme Commander and Oblivion got huge boosts as well.
Crysis is still choppy.

As for gameplay:
The mediocre gamplay is a result of the console era. Pretty and dumb sells better than the opposite. Same with movies and TV. And whether you guys like to admit it or not, simply because EA put it out it WILL be on consoles eventually.

I suppose I could just go ahead and blame all these things on EA, which I will.
Now I'm not mad at Crytek and have one more reason to hate EA.

Personally, I thought the demo was pretty good and really quite fun to play. I had most settings on Very High (with the exception of Post-processing and Particle, which were on High) and the game ran smoothly through the whole thing. I'm really looking forward to it.

Game runs fine for me ... kind of. The game sets itself to install in the x86 program files directory rather than the standard one... the problem with that is, it never created any shortcuts. So I went to create one myself and saw a 64-bit binary. Forgetting that it was in the 32-bit Program Files directory, I tried to use that one only to find it pretty much doing nothing other than displaying that pre-release text on the top right with a black screen. After a tiny bit, I realized my folly and got it playing. I'm not a huge fan of the suit menu. It's probalby partly because my Logitech G5's mouse wheel can move to the left and the right, which makes a definitive push not so easy to do. Also, I was a bit disappointed with what I could do with some of the suit powers. I thought you do things like knock vehicles around? I had Maximum Strength on and tried to hit (T) or use (F) on a vehicle and it didn't do anything.

The game definitely looks good. I was running in 1680x1050 with all settings on Very High (the game chose this for me using the Optimal button) and AA was on 2x. I don't know if there's an in-game FPS meter or if everyone is using FRAPS, but the game felt average. The pace felt a little slow, which could've been slow framerate or just how the game is. Although I think the fact that the mouths and sound weren't exactly on-key shows that the FPS may be below 30.

Loved the demo.
At first i thought if felt a bit too much like Far Cry, but with the suit powers and events that happen near the end of the demo, i think the game is going to better than Far Cry.

Demo played absolutely fine for me also in Winxp 32bit Directx 9 mode with all settings on highest i could set at 1680x1050 and no AA.

Im going to re-install Vista for the umpteenth time just to play the demo again in directx 10 mode.

Part of the Games for Windows accreditation is supporting the XBOX 360 controller, if not others. If the controller hadn't been plugged in, it would have defaulted to keyboard and mouse.

dunno what to tell you since your 7900GTX = 2 X850XT's. CPU bound i guess. they said the bounding goes CPU->GPU->RAM so it may well be your CPU if you have a lower end AthlonX2.

i'm perfectly happy with KBM controls.

The crashes are getting annoying - the SP demo has crashed twice now with hard reboots to fix. At low settings at 1024x768 (required to make it run smoothly), the jaggies are so terrible that it doesn't look that good. And AA doesn't want to work without putting shaders on high, which makes my FPS chug.

Note: I'm using a C2D E6600, 8800 GTS 640, and 2gb RAM and running the game at 1280X1024, no AA.

I found this demo to be quite enjoyable. The best part of the game, as others have mentioned already, is the freedom you have to play however you want. I had a lot of fun using the tranquilizer darts on a few guys, shooting/smacking the rest, then turning on max strength to send my unconscious victims flying. Although I spent more than 2 hours beating the level on my first try (I killed myself to replay parts again and explored a lot), I plan on playing through it a couple more times to see what I can do differently.

I didn't measure my FPS, but what I was getting was totally acceptable. The game almost crashed once as I was running through the foliage, but came back after 5 seconds or so. Although I know it looks super amazing with DX10, I do not have Vista and the hardware which will allow this game to shine does not exist yet. Nonetheless, the game is still stunning in DX9, especially when you walk out of the edge of the forest and see the sun rising over the ocean.

Cons: The distance at which objects are rendered is horrible! Little plants pop up right in front of you as you're running through the jungle and it is very annoying. Big things pop up out of no where when you put your binoculars on. Hopefully they fix this. The AI varies. I saw a guy against a wall crouching, standing up, crouching again, and so on. If you are getting your ass kicked in a firefight, all you have to do is run 20 ft away and they don't chase you. Eventually one guy might come walking towards you, but by that time your health is full and your gun is reloaded. I'm pretty sure some guys saw me and didn't even do anything. My biggest complaint is the lack of gore. If oil can come out of barrels why can't blood squirt out of people?

Pros: The suit is awesome. I find the 3rd mouse button wheel to be very easy to use. You can change powers quickly and easily to allow you to do tons of fun things. The AI is pretty smart at times. If you make a pretty big scene in killing soldiers guys further up on the beach will drive down to fight you and boats will show up. I love how you can knock down trees and structures. At one point you can send some logs rolling down slope to crush some guys. I love how the enemy shouts insults at you and says other things. Tranquilizer darts are awesome. Best of all, the script is very good and I feel the story is going to rock hard.

Overall, I feel this level is just meant to give players a taste of the suit powers while you have fun killing stupid soldiers. I can't wait to fight aliens, as I believe they will be very smart and hard to kill.

Hey any guess how much FPS i would get 1280X1024or 1024X768 at very high ??? will it be even playable on these resolution on my rig ?

My rig :

E4300 @ 2.8
8800GTS 320mb at (610/1050)
2GB DDR2 667 Corsair

Oh man, that was sweet. I just got done playing this demo.

It was a super fast download, too.

Okay, here are my specs and such:
AMD 4200+ x2 running @ 2,816mhz (evga 590 SLI board if you care)
4, 1GB sticks of corsair 6400 ram at 5-5-5-12
evga 8800gtx @ stock speeds

My settings on the game are:
Very High Textures
High Objects
High Shadows
High Physics
Very high shaders
Medium volumetric Effects
Medium Game effects
Medium post processing
Medium particle effects
High Water effects
Very High Sound Quality/effects

EDIT: My res is 1280x1024, no AA

The game runs at an average of 40fps, low is about 16fps, and high can get up to 50-60 or so. This game is engineered beautifully. NO crashes, NO issues installing. I had the game freeze up for about 2 seconds twice, and those were the only problems.

Holy crap I want this game so bad. I'm absolutely sold on this. I cannot believe that people were bitching about the performance. Even at Medium everything it looks good, but damn, you can turn this guy up pretty high and still get decent frames.

Has anyone figured out what the "OTHER SURPRISE" is yet?

Filefront is retarded.

Everytime I download (and install) a demo from them I have to redownload it because it won't work the first try. so f**king lame.

I'm not going to waste my times since I heard it wasn't that good.

Best demo ever.

Take all the fast-paced and open combat of Far Cry, throw in some Deus Ex with augmentations and weapon modifications, and take away all the instability and bugs of the two games and you have Crysis. The demo gave me about two hours of gameplay, and I loved the whole thing. The HUD and loading system are both very slick as well, as opposed to recent disappointments like Bioshock and Hellgate: London. Sorry to hear that some people are having bugs and performance issues, because for what I have (an X2 3800+, 7900 GT, and 1GB RAM) it ran flawlessly. Assuming they didn't throw all the good stuff in the demo, the full game is easily going to be one of my favorites.

It's worth it to find out for yourself ... i am waiting on a HW upgrade to Crossfire/Penryn before buying it ... unless they do a LOT of optimizations.

This the most amazing game ever. Far beyond my expectations! Everything on High, no AA however. 8800GTS 320MB @ 1680x1050, absolutely playable. The physics is incredible - destroy pretty much anything you want! I wish we could toss bodies around, though. Here are some screenies -

"since when did the koreans have themselves a mothafvckin' freeze ray??" ahhahahaha

edit: i also changed the resolution to 1280x1024 and the SP demo was *still* smooth (except for the intro scene with the parachute drop)

1280x1024 all settings @ medium

Game is pretty good overall. The foliage is still Far Crap but the overall graphics are pretty superb. AI is hawt. Suit is hawt.
