Yeah, but if it's lagging in a multi-GPU setup with all options on, then even with options off and lower res it's still not going to get great framerates, and playing the game with the options off makes the game look nothing like what it's supposed to...

precisely why im dropping out of PC gaming, and picking up a 360 instead. this machine wont be mine by the end of the month, its going to some one who a) will make more use of it (i mean ive spent nearly £2500-3000 on this machine from its conception and now it see's little more use than internet/email/bit-torrent/msn) b) who isnt so fussy over graphics and hardware.

im at the point in my life now where i find myself buying books over games lol! and having spent £4000 on a fabulous second hand car (deal of the century as far as im concerned) i cant justify spending nearly a 1/4 of that on GPU's alone just to get choppy FPS with all the bells and whistles on and the res cranked up

(and dont play the hi-res card, if you own 700quids worth of GPU, its more than likely your gonna have a hi-res display to use them on)

Believe me you'll be back. There will be an irresistable PC game that you must have and you'll end up building and/or buying a new PC to play it.

lol i havent even had time to enjoy this X1900XT i got before it goes to my bro.

your probably right though, but it wont be for a while. when i graduate in 3 years and get a solid job then ill probably come back. because then ill probably be able to aford what ever computer bits take my fancy

OT but out of curiosity, which car was it?? A classic or something fairly recent?? PM me if you don't wanna post it.

its nothing too special i guess... i got a 02 Ford Focus 3door zetec in silver (its 4 years old as of last week) but the interior is like brand new, the paint is almost flawless, its a joy to drive in town and on the M-way, its pretty zippy as well and its averaged less than 9k a year. its just an immaculate piece of machinery and im glad ive bought it.

its even better since similar cars, cars with more milage and older examples are being sold for over £6000. at the actual ford dealer they were asking £6750 for pretty much the same car!

heh maybe, but if its anything remotely like BF2 ill get bored within 2minutes. online racing is where its at pal

that and RTS, of which Act of War was supremely good, and its expansion High Treason was actually a very difficult challenge.... i enjoyed them both. and the best thing is you dont need a top notch GPU to play things like this

I'm on the same boat. My 360 gets way more play time than my PC. Also, for quite some time I don't see any PC games that I really care about but quite a few 360 games that I want to play.

I really like Live. It's really hassle free for demo's and online play. With Street Fighter II coming out tomorrow, I'll be spending a lot of time on there.

I'll build a new PC when vista is out but wont' be upgrading as usual to keep with the times. It's just now worth it.

Also, I'm having much more fun with my hd dvd player and hd dvd's than any money I've spend on a high end GPU Now that's an IQ jump!

i agree completely. the industry simply moves to fast to make it worth spending £1000's on GPU's and processors, because 6months later its old hat, and you wont get your £££ when you try to sell it.

its like buying a big citroen.... it'll cost you 30 grand, then after a year theres a new model and yours isnt even worth the price of the newspaper ad advertising it. (citroen is a french car maker by the way, their big exec cars have a history of horrendous depreciation)

ive had a go with my mates 360 and yes live is fantastic, so easy to use, so easy to find where you wanna go etc, its great...and you can lounge on the big comfy sofa while you do it! so ill be picking one up for sure

ill be replacing this thing with a laptop probably this time next year. ive got a spare PC i can use in the mean time. i know what i want already though, but with Vista and Merom just round the corner it makes sense to wait.

wicked sony laptop

http://www.trustedreviews.com/article.aspx?art=3169

Blu-ray re-writer drive, core duo, up to 2GB DDR, 2 hard disks, 7600GT graphics, VGA out HDMI out, and a 17inch X-black display with a whopping 1920x1200 res! Windows MCE and a built in TV-Tuner to boot!

ill probably buy the later incarnation of it, when its got vista MCE and a better BR drive

Which racing games you play??

I've played GPL(from 1998 I think but is probably the best racing sim still...driving the old Nordeshleife is just beyond words...no other track even comes close) online, one of the Colin McRae games, and F1 99-02 online. Too bad Richard Burns Rally doesn't have online cause that is THE best rally game I've ever played...very difficult to go fast(at least more so than any of the CMR series) but very rewarding and it feels oh so nice with the Logitech MOMO Force (the red one).

I'd play GTR or GTL more often but I hate having to swap CDs because of Starforce...and NoCD patch doesn't work for me.

My Dads got a Focus Zetec too, although 5 door - got it for about £4,300 three years back (99 reg).

ine plays fine. I never have had any problems with that game, and it looks awesome.
The CoD2 DX9 renderer is one of the poorest in existance. Performance is attrocious and the visuals are barely better than the DX7 mode.

Really? I thought it was pretty cool. I do see how the shadows could have been better, but some of the textures and their look while under HQAF x16 is amazing. I don't know, maybe I just got tired of BF2's look. I'm replaying HL2 at the moment and must say that that game's visuals when maxed on my NEC makes it feel like a whole different game. Does anyone think I should get Episode 1? I mean how much more playing time do you get for the $20.00?

I haven't finished it yet, but I've enjoyed it so far. From what I've heard, you get 4-6 hours or so of gameplay...I got my copy of Episode 1 on sale for $7.99, I'd probably advise that you try to find a similar sale instead of paying the full $20.

In-store at Circuit City almost two months ago (basically just a week after the game's release). Not sure if there are any similar deals running now.

IMO SLI should have died with the 3dfx vodoo craze... these guys need to take a page from Intel/AMD and work on smaller, less heat/power draw IMO.

Consider also that it just encourages less efficient use of system resources and sloppy programming.

Hence why you have such hardware-hog games like FEAR.

FEAR honestly looks terrible...but with very pretty Special FX. I can't believe I can't use 4xSSAA with this game even with crossfire...POS. Keeps stuttering into the teens when I turn around. But at least I get 300 fps when I look @ the floor -_-'

Wow. Mine isn't that bad and I've only got one XTX. vsync+tb, max settings, 4xAA/16xHQAF 1680x1050 and all is well. Even have Quality Adaptive AA as well. I turn around and get into fights without teen frames. The only time I see my screen really hurt is when there is alot of alpha textures and AAA being rendered with lots of gun fights and debree.

I think it looks awesome btw. Great decal textures and contrasting lighting. The only thing it struggles in is the interior "plainess".

You haven't finished it yet? Are you kidding? I played that nonstop. It's amazing. It pretty much follows the same formula has HL2 though: you sort of walk around for awhile with no weapon, not fighting, then you fight a bunch of stuff but it's not too hard, then you have to go somewhere but it doesn't work out well, then you have to fight a bunch of zombies in the dark to get where you need to be (most. terrifying. ever.). The ending was probably my favorite level ever, it's so just so fast paced and ridiculous.

This is the first week since about the middle of June that I've really been able to sit down and use my computer for more than 30 minutes at a time (been busy moving). Plus I have a really bad habit of putting a game down and not returning to it for a long time...I didn't finish FarCry and HL2 until Spring of this year (and I bought them when they were released).

Are you sure??? I runs @ 60fps when Im in a tight room but anything interesting that ever happens brings down the fps. @ HardOCP in their playable setting, they settled with 1600x1200 with 2xSSAA with crossfire -- for exactly the reason I said. This is one game where SLI does considerably better. Non of this crossfire gets 120 fps but SLI get 300 -- who cares! The minimum framerates is where it's @. Maybe not teens, but like 25 fps is uncomfortable.

The graphics under Dx9 aren't bad in CoD2, but if you run it in DX7 mode it looks almost the same except for shader effects. The DX9 implementation is BAD, it is literally 7 or 8 times slower than DX7 mode and it really doesn't add much except better shadows and effects. I can't run it at "normal"(1280x1024 with 4xAA) settings on LAN games because even with my setup listed below, I get about 15fps unless I change to Dx7 mode, where it jumps much closer to 80 or 90. My friends with lower-spec machines all thought the game was unplayable crap until I showed them how to drop it into DirectX 7 mode.

I don't have the unfortunate performance you're describing. My XTX is overclocked at 740/850 though so maybe there is something with the clocks that have helped.?????????

Noone is forcing you to have all the bells and whistles on. Don't blame the PC industry for your lack of financial sense.

Considering that the computer is a multi-purpose machine, if you already have a good processor and foundation for performing non-gaming computing tasks, all you really need to spend is $300-400 on a graphics card once a year to maintain high-end gaming functionality.

Taking into account that you can sell your previous generation hardware, having an up-to-date gaming machine does not have to be a financial strain if you reserve a few brain cells to figure out how to accomplish this relatively easy task. In the end it's a small price to pay for having a gaming device superior to all the rest.
