Curse Adaware and "coolwebsearch"

Adaware just keeps removing this same registry entry over and over and over again and it keeps coming back. It forces my IE homepage to some ghetto popup hell. Also, my notepad.exe has vanished. I don't know how, or why, but notepad doesn't work anymore. No viruses either.

I want to hang myself.

Except after running that, Adaware still finds it, but the problem appears to be gone. Homepage thingie works right.

had the same problem. finally updated ad-aware and ran cws-shredder like a dozen times and it's gone...i hope. sooooo annoying. i actually switched to mozilla firefox because of it

even if notepad.exe was deleted, it should be replaced as windows xp keeps several systems in place to restore it automaitcally, bot a backup file and a hidden file.

i dunno where to get notepad.exe from. search your harddrive for it and then put it into /windows/system32 as well as /windows directory. To know where to put it, you can look to see where the notepad program link links to by checking it properties.

there's a stupid fvcking video that takes you to an adult website and installs a trojan against your will. Even when you click "no" (which actually doesn't work because the window pops up again, so you have to end process or accept) it STILL puts spyware and a virus on your computer.

And if you do click yes, which lets you see the video, it installs an adult toolbar on the top of IE.

What really sucks is that firefox is my default browser and IE still opened up, :|

switch to the java virtual machine, CWS uses an exploit in the MVM, so if you do that and run CWShredder, you should have no reinfections unless your security settings are poop

Turn off system restore, run Ad Aware, turn system restore back on.

Same here. Adaware and Spybot find thing beyond harmless cookies on my machine.

People, set your IE security settings to Medium and click NO to everything. And don't let anyone else use your system. Yes, it really is THAT easy.

Disregarding spyware, there are other good reasons to switch to Firefox. Fewer people go over it with fine-tooth combs looking for ways to exploit it, the UI is, IMO, superb and better than any others I've tried, it's not tied into your OS, and tabbed browsing is great.

IIRC that's because AdAware doesn't check your Mozilla cookies, not because they're not there. The new version of Spybot will though.

the best part for me is that the text can be magnified to any size. This helps a lot when you have to sit in front of a computer all day

I can set IE to stop all cookies too. But that stops saved passwords and website prefs as well.

The cookies are basically harmless.
