machine 1 - win2k dlink 530tx NIC
machine 2 - winxp dlink 530tx NIC

Not sure why my winxp machine connects at 100mps, but my main machine the win2k only connects at 10mps.

It goes through an excel 8 port mini-hub.

The cable to my win2k says cat5 on it and is only about 2 feet long.

Could it be the cable or is there something else I need to look at.

Thanks

Connect the Win2K machine to the HUB using the cable off the WinXP machine - perhaps the cable has a break in it or something

Do both machines go through the same hub?

I will try using the same cable as there is some spare to cut out a 2 foot length, but I need to borrow some crimpers to do that, and my mate isn't back till the weekend.

This will most probably answer it for you.

Below is an extract of the hub from a supplier.

Does 10BASE mean maximum 10mps, as some other hubs have 10/100BASE

If so why does one of them connect at 100mps.

Appreciate some advice.

Thanks

Yes

Are you sure one is connecting at 100mps and the other at 10mps or are you just seeing how the NIC is being ID'ed by windows? Check your transfer speeds and download times for both PC's and I will bet that they are close to each other.

Sure, the xp machine indicates in the taskbar it's connected at 100mps.

How is the best way to test the speed, for a LAN

Thanks

Hi

Right click on "My Network Places" and choose "Properties"
Then, find the D-Link card, and right click and choose "Properties"
Then, click on the "Configure" button.
Then go to the "Advanced" Tab
Then click on "Link Speed/Duplex Mode" and change the value to the apropriate speed. If you are using a hub the correct setting will be the speed of the hub, using half duplex. Are you connected to a switch you can use the speed of the switch and full duplex.

The speeds has to be the same on both computers and the duplex mode should also be the same.

Now why is this nescesary, this is a problem with auto-negotiation of the network speed/mode. This is a problem I see every day at work, and thefore we allways force the network speed/mode to avoid any problems.

Hope this helps you

Theoretical 10Mb/sec. (b=bit) means speed of 1.25MB/sec. (B=Byte).

Theoretical 100Mb/sec. (b=bit) means speed of 12.5MB/sec. (B=Byte).

In reality a good system would yield 70-80 % of the above, i.e. transfer rate of about 9MB/sec.

A simple measure to get a general idea of the speed can be done by copying a big file, and measure the time it took.

For real eval. the following is considered to be standard.
