<< GENEVA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 19, 2001--AMD (NYSE:AMD) today announced that DaimlerChrysler AG has implemented a server powered by the AMD Athlon(tm) MP processor 1800+ in its Mercedes-Benz Technology Center (MTC) in Germany.
Based on AMD's advanced multiprocessing solution, DaimlerChrysler is utilizing the strength of several hundred AMD Athlon MP processors in one of the largest high-performance Linux clusters in the German automotive industry, to run crash simulations for Mercedes-Benz vehicles.

DaimlerChrysler's crash simulation team selected the AMD Athlon MP processor-based solution because it delivers superior performance and stability on single and dual processor-based servers for enterprise class applications.

``We evaluated many solutions and concluded that the AMD Athlon MP processor-based server was the best choice in terms of performance and stability,'' said Dr. Johannes Luginsland, manager IT infrastructure for safety and comfort simulation, DaimlerChrysler.
>>

I stated a while ago in this thread that businesses would take advantage of a superior performing system with a low price tag. I was basically told in that thread that no business would touch AMD unless an OEM carried them first. I had more faith in the intelligence of corporations than that, and this shows that big business is getting the message that AMD is as capable of getting the job done in a work environment as any other platform out there.

and not to mention:

there goes the stability issue.

DaimlerChrysler is utilizing the strength of several hundred AMD Athlon MP processors in one of the largest high-performance Linux clusters in the German automotive industry, to run crash simulations for Mercedes-Benz vehicles.

Smart MP technology deliver the superior performance we need for mission-critical supercomputing.

Bahahahahahahahahahha, so much for those thugs in the Northwood thread

heheh, that extra $350 is money too... i'm guessing these clustered boxes are rather bare... so that $350 is a significant difference and allows the purchase of many more boxes, far making up for that 5%.

and these are dual boxes, the savings over intel dual boxes is huge. i'll bet they got double the boxes over going with a dual xeon solution.

Humm - perhaps DaimlerChrysler AG should of spoken to you before making a decision.

Hmmm - unexpected move.

I would have expected a corp like Daimler/Chrysler to have bought such server kit (as any) from whoever their OEM of choice is (Dell, IBM, or whohaveyou) simply for homogenity & ease of support.

Seems like an rather unuasl "openess to risk" for a corporation that size. Very unusual. I'm not saying here that the Athlon MP is crap or anything like that. It's simply easier to stick to one OEM & have them sort the problems out (simple TCO [Total Cost of Ownership] here).

Very unusual. I'd like to think what the IT Manager's oppinion on this is. (It's rarely them who do the buys. Maybe their "buying dept." simply got the Athlon systems BECAUSE they were cheaper - without asking the IT manager.

I'd be very concerned about homogenity - you do not really want various different hardware platforms to look over. Gives unnecessary headaches & all that.

Hmm ... as I said, surprising move.

Not to diminsh AMD's success (that's some super good press!), but I've worked at DC when it was still Mercedes Benz and If things haven't changed a big deal, then Shathal is spot on. We had to order things like mice and keyboards through central buying .

IMO keyword here is that this happended at the MTC. They are a more separate entity and work closer to the uni/scientific community, hence more freedom in buying decisions etc.

This will certainly help AMD.

Good press, good money.. and MTC is a nice name to have on your list of large supporters.. they are fairly credible!

I think they use VIA C3 processors... their crash simulations are simplistic and takes hours just to render the car, LOL

Please don't flame me, just a lil' jokey joke

Cray has been out of business for years and the last incarnation of the Cray is easily outclassed by today's enterprise servers.

Well, that's what I've always firmly believed.
