This is true. Jet Ski rentals also expensive (sometimes more).

Pontoon boat rentals pretty cheap but they suck of course.

The local place i rent from is only $65 for ski boat, $60 for a wave runner, and only $45 for a pontoon. Still more than a car but its better than what your paying.

This place will rent you a Rhodes 19 all day on the weekend for $125 or a Benneteau 21 for $155, but you gotta know how you sail. The Beneteau 21 is a great boat in light wind and a blast to sail.
