Damn I'm Jealous...

A guy I've known for a number of years has his own recording studio now. Let me explain...

He and I are both 16, juniors in high school. We met in 5th grade because of a similar interest in piano. I'm a classical player and hope to pursue it for a career, but he is a phenomenal jazz player. He deserves every bit of respect and popularity he gets for this-throw whatever chord changes you want at him, he can improvise all over it.

Anywho, we both also have an interest in modern pop/rock song-writing. We've both been writing a lot of piano-driven stuff lately, and were always hoping to find bands for ourselves and/or get the chance to record a bunch of the stuff ourselves (we both also play numerous instruments, so, we could cover it all). It was kind of like a distant dream, giving the financial issues of purchasing equipment, studio time, etc.\

So, I'm over at his house last week. I wander into his basement for the first time in a year or so, and wow!. The whole basement is covered in equipment, cords, etc. He's got 4 synthesizers, guitars, basses, amps, PA system, mixers, drum kits w/ drum mics AND a drum machine, microphones galore, studio monitors and headphones, computers, software, burners, the whole works. There is NOTHING missing-it's like walking into a professional studio. He has been recording and mixing his stuff for the past few months, and made a couple of wonderfully put-together CD's.

Of course, I ask the question: "Man, not to be rude, but how in the world could you possibly afford all this?" He replies "my dad bought it all for me. Y'know, this is just the stuff you need if you want to take it to the next level." Yeah, I think, but most people get rich off their music first and then buy the studio equipment for themselves.
I'm amazed that his dad was even able to afford all this equipment-it literally has to be upwards of $35,000 at least together. I know, because I've been scoping out all these things in catalogs, etc for the past couple years.

So, as you might imagine, I'm insanely jealous. Granted, about 6 months ago his mother passed away. As crude as this may sound, I can understand that that is one less person with living expenses, so they (his dad and himself) probably have a bit more money than they once did. I almost wonder though, if perhaps all this stuff might be a material attempt at the dad helping his son cope, or something.

Anyway, I know everyone here is gonna say: "Hey, you two are friends, why don't you just ask to borrow his studio for awhile and record your stuff there?" Well, see, we're really not all that close. We get alone well enough, but we've certainly hit our fair share of bumps in the road. Seeing as this is no mystery to either of us, I think it would be pretty rotten of me to ask to use his stuff.

Oh well, just needed to kinda vent some of my thoughts out there...thanks for listening...

Two words:

Life insurance.

No matter how they paid for it, though, it doesn't matter - Life is usually unfair.

Being spoiled does not necessarily equal a successful future, update us in 20 years = You might feel different then.

I wouldn't be at all jealous of his equipment (and wouldn't be surprised if he is jealous of you)

My mom passed away in February of this year and it is a huge void to fill. As you continue to age and gain more worldly experience, you will come to realize that possessions are not as important as family or friends.

I am a 30 year old married man who misses his mom every day

Do not take your parents for granted.

EDIT - Besides, neither talent nor $35,000 in equipment will give him success. Success will only come with lots of hard work. This is much easier to accomplish with love and support from family and friends. They will help to pick you up when you stumble through the path of life.

Maybe you should think about mixing your talents, make music together.

Well said. I lost my mom when I was in college.

johnjohn320, you can't help your feelings, but you can try to better understand why you feel that way and why it may not be fair to your friend to feel that way.

i'd be jealous too! Thing is like others said he won't get anywhere unless he is great. You've said he is so this will help him but I fail to believe that it's needed to succeed. I'm sure if you're a kick-ass pianist you could become a success practicing at home on a reasonable piano!

I know several people who've put together their own studios and it's helped them make a lot of money. It's a sound investment (pun intended ) if you can afford it and put it to good use. I'd say it was a wonderful thing his father did and if this guy is as good as you say he is, then it probably won't go to waste.

Good equipment is a wonderful thing, but good equipment in the hands of someone with talent is even better. Even if you're jealous I bet you're still happy for him to have such great stuff. If the guy actually puts all that equipment to to use then it's not excessive at all.

Don't be jealous, be happy. He's your friend, and you both can benefit from the stuff, only you don't have to take care of it all.

I think some people may have misunderstood me-I'm not jealous of him as a person, Lord knows he's had a tough life up to this point in a lot of ways that I'm lucky. I'm not jealous of his talent that I mentioned-because (warning: egotistic-sounding comment coming up) I'm talented as well, in fact, I see myself every bit as talented as him, only I play different music than he.

All that I am jealous of is his equipment. Azraele, I don't quite understand why it is wrong for me to feel that way.

No, No, No, you misunderstood. Forgive me if I wasn't clear enough. You can't help your feelings. I wasn't trying to say you're wrong to feel them.

I'm sorry I've had a very stressful day and my mind is all cluttered. I've had bad news on top of bad news on top of bad news. When I figure out what I was trying to say, I'll let you know, but rest assured what I was trying to say wasn't bad.

Can we get some recordings of you guys? I don't care about quality, I just search constantly for some good jazz/classical solo piano work and can never find anything good.

Then what the hell are you venting about? That he has more toys than you?

If that's the case, then you need to learn that there's always going to be someone with more and better equipment than you.

Yup, that's pretty much it.

Pretty soon I should be getting a recording of myself shipped to me, if you're interested, let me know and perhaps I can upload it. The CD also contains some friends of mine (other classical pianists) that I met at Indiana University this past summer, so I can pick out some stuff for you if you like. I have some of my own stuff lying around right now, but I'd have to know what you're looking for first before I sent something to you.

As for jazz, etc, I might be able to get ahold of some of this guy's (the kid in question) demo tapes or something.

At least he is talented. I used to be in a band with a kid who absolutly S-U-C-K-E-D at guitar. He had like 36 guitars hanging in his basement, 2 half stacks, a full PA w/ huge speakers, and ZERO talent. Kinda sad really.

Dude, I know how you feel. I've got friends who's parents buy them nice high-end electric guitars and stuff, and I'm still stuck with a crappy old acoustic that doesn't play very well. I also have problems being content with what I've got (see rigs link in .sig) when I see the dual athlons or xeons that people around here have, along with their Seagate U160 SCSI 15kRPM drives in RAID 5, etc.

You just have to learn to be content with what you've got, and tweak / overclock / optimize it to make the best use of it.
