Darwin strikes again?

DAVIDSONVILLE, Md. -- Police said a 19-year-old man leaning out of a moving car died Monday after the vehicle swiped a telephone pole.

The victim was identified as David Yamamoto Hepner. The crash occurred just after 5:40 p.m. on Governor Bridge Road near Patuxent River Road in Davidsonville.

Anne Arundel County police said the vehicle was traveling east on Governor Bridge Road when its occupants -- a driver and two passengers -- saw friends on the side of the road and yelled and waved at them.

Hepner was "hanging out the window from his waist up" when the vehicle swiped the pole, causing Hepner to hit the pole, police said.

He was taken to Anne Arundel Medical Center, where he died.

Police said speed and alcohol don't appear to be factors in the crash.

The investigation is still under way.

Not really sure how much investigating needs to be done though. Not the best way to go either. Ouch.

Bad luck would be like... the tire blew out, car rolled, & his seatbelt broke, causing him to be ejected.

Putting your body out the window of a moving car is never bad luck.

I've done this and nearly fell out while the car was making a turn but my buddy grabbed hold of my belt and held me in. We weren't driving close to any objects but I could easily have fallen out on the pavement at about 15 MPH.

I wish I were trolling, it wouldn't hurt so bad to be talking about him.

I understand the stupidity comments, I really do. We're still mentally beating him up for it...

But it's still a tragic accident, tragic mostly because of how easily it could have been prevented.

I just wish it wasn't so easy to make fun of tragedy over the internet.

Whatever you say here hardly matters to us, your opinions, whatever. But we do ask that you at least consider, for a moment, how his family and friends are feeling and understand that the humor can only go so far.

If you knew him... knew his smile... It's just hard to see people trying to make an example out of him.

The same thing that makes young people believe they're invincible, causes them to believe they escape any serious injury because they are good rather than lucky.

At one time, I thought the same thing and looked harshly upon young people who were seriously injured or killed doing reckless things. But then I reached a certain age, took an inventory of all the things I had done and finally realized that I'm still alive, not because I was "good", but because I was damned lucky. And by "lucky", I mean chance, odds, or law of averages, not some mysterious force of good mojo that hovers over a person and protects them.
