The country tried this in 1974 and it was horrible. School children were walking to school or waiting for buses in the dark.

Despite wide support to make DST permanent, the danger to children and eventual disenchantment with the idea led most to rail against it.
What percentage of the US population is school age kids? And what percentage of that small percentage walks to school? We're getting darn close to zero now. And 3/4 of those kids have some type of sports or other after school function going on that pushes into the early evening, so now it will be daylight for them when they're going home. An hour of daylight in the evening when >90% of normal people will actually use it is much more beneficial than an hour in the morning when sane people are asleep or going to work.
It will be interesting to see if there's any partisan nonsense in the house about this. There was none in the senate which is a shock.

Covid taught us that we really don't care about our children so half the country can't use it as an excuse.

I have depression and I can say that I would love to see the change. Let's see if all those people railing about helping those with mental health problems were actually serious or not. I'm not holding my breath.

Easy solution: Have school start an hour later. problem solved. It amazes me the stupidity of people, where their solution to the children walking in the dark, is one that effects 320 Million people, rather than one that only effects the schools and the children attending.

BTW, there are a lot of places in the US, regardless of the time change, children still walk in the dark going to school. Hell, Alaska has 3 month long nights, how do those kids make it to school, and back home from school, safely in the dark? Bottom line, it's a stupid reason to keep switching clocks twice a year.

Growing up in the great white north, DST didn't make a bit of difference as far it it being light or dark on the way to/from school in winter. It was dark in both directions.

Exactly!

Just make DST permanent. The whole switching the clock forward and backward each year is stupid, a literal waste of time, and dangerous.

If Jesus wanted us to have daylight savings time it would have been in the bible. Why doesn't anyone think about what Jesus would want?

Lol, yea no doubt, we should probably just be concerned with what he did want, things like feeding hungry people and caring for the ill

By the way, this is all just a ploy to sell more clocks and other devices with preset DST schedules. Half the stuff I have sets and resets itself without being 'smart'. I'm guessing they won't know what to do and may need to be replaced.

honestly, i dont care which way, permanent DST or permanent standard. i am 100% for picking one and fucking leaving it at that. i fully support this and hope it goes all the way to the top, and gets signed in.

the time change makes me so so so so so annoyed. like, really annoyed. possibly even ultra annoyed.

Either standard or DST I just want the changeovers to stop. Start schools at 9 or whatever if thats what it takes, early morning starts have already been established to be bad for kids anyway.

To be fair, almost EVERYONE has depression.

STD or DST I don't care as long as I don't have to subject my body to the change twice a year. It takes me a few days to acclimate to waking up an hour "early" every spring.

So, we should continue to have this bad policy since schools knowingly open too soon? Do you also know that kids have been shown to learn less because schools open too soon as well? Learning is directly related to the amount of time the sun has been up, not the clock setting. Any school opening before roughly 10 AM is just harming kids sleep, health, learning, and grades. Not to mention that by starting later, schools can put a significant dent in the number of delinquent kids without parental supervision after school.

When I was in Kentucky, my elementary age kids had to be at the bus stop at 6:50am. And they were the last stop on the route. Some kids had to be there at 6:30. That was just miserable and did no one any favors other than the district that used the same buses for all three school systems (elementary, middle, high) so they staggered start times.

This. We just switched to DST and sunrise here in southern New England is just after 7AM. Midwinter, with DST, 8AM will be like midnight. Switch to what God (and the Brits) intended-make standard time permanent.

BTW perhaps the most fawning bill name ever.

Maybe Rubio and the rest of the pompous overpaid A-holes can work on something serious. BTW pot is still illegal-and frequently a felony-fifty years or more since this Prohibiton II should have gone into the ashheap.
