I don't know I got my subwoofer for less than that.

It's 200 watt, and it's 10 inches..

thats enough wall shaking for me, and it costs me free.

Yeah, At first this new verson was marked as 120 as the old one was but I think they ended up spending more to build it then they previously thought so hopeing once they start selling a good amount of them it will drop back down to 120 regular price with free shipping shortly after.

I'm looking for a good but cheap musical sub. I play probably 70% music / 30% movies. Unpowered or self powered is OK, I have a spare amp. Any suggestions?

PS-WAF (wife acceptance factor) a high priority, sonotubes need not apply.

Yea

The mega hot deal is when partsexpress has the 12" sub for $120 or the 10" sub for $99 and shipped free, which happens every six months or so. The good part is partsexpress is long overdue for another free shipping promo so everyone keep your eyes peeled. While i'll def agree OP's deal is a good one, the free shipping promo's are def the icing on the hot deal cake.

i have the old-style 10" and 12", and had (for a brief time) the new style 12". while i wish dayton would go back to the down-firing style (or at least put that driver in the new cabinet - the new style doesn't sound as good as the old style), these are still great subs for the money and i'm very happy with both.

like SJetski said, PE occassionally runs promos at the reduced price with free shipping - then they're REALLY a steal!!!

only bad thing is, once you have a nice sub, you want more....i have upgrade-itis really bad now!!!

You know i've heard that once or twice before, people preferring the older model dayton sub's over these newer ones. I take it that it's definitely a different driver for these new cabinets. Can you put your finger on and describe why the older dayton's sounds better? Or is the difference so slight that it may just be a preference issue?

Just thinking aloud here but I've read that a down-firing driver permeates the floors more and some people may not prefer that so i'm wondering if this is just a down-firing vs side-firing preference issue. Not so sure that swapping driver's would help either, because from my very limited understanding, certain enclosure's need certain driver characteristics and swapping drivers without researching first can often make a sub sound worse.

SJetski,

I'd say it's several things, the driver probably being the biggest factor. When I ordered the 12", I received the old-style, but it was damaged in shipment. One of the corners was bashed in and it was about that time that the new style was released, so when I called into PE, they said I'd be getting the new style in the mail. Well, six weeks went by before I got the new sub, and when I tested them both side by side, the new sub sounded flat and dull - it didn't have nearly as much "oomph" and just sounded thin. I pulled both of the subs apart to compare everything, and the new driver was much smaller, with a thinner cone and MUCH thinner surround. The cabinet wasn't as thick and didn't have as much bracing. The amp appeared to be mostly the same. The new ports are not flared, and were actually made of cardboard instead of plastic (not a big deal, I suppose). All in all, the new sub wasn't as nice as the old sub, and it just felt and sounded cheaper.

I tried several locations in the room to see if it was any sort of room effect and couldn't make it sound any better - and I did direct comparisons with some movie scenes as well as some frequency sweeps - the old sub simply sounded better in every case.

Oh yeah, I did put the old driver in the new cabinet - it helped, but didn't make it sound like the old one - that is why I think it's several smaller issues that add up...

All that said, I still think Dayton makes the best subs for the money....

hmmph, i think the info you post here is very relevant. It sounds like Dayton has finally capitalized on it's sub's reputation and have begun to maximize profits by going cheap(er) on the parts.

The best part is that you own, and have auditioned these subs side by side. You've even taken them apart to see the differences, which seem substantial enough imho. I've bookmarked your post as a reference for other Dayton subwoofer discussion threads. I'm definitely not saying that they're a bad buy at the $120 pricepoint since i have little basis for comparison...

Thx for the info
