Daytona, a waste of good cars and money, another wreckfest.
I'l watch some of it, too many commercials plus the announcers use the word "Stage" way too many times
I have long been a fan of NASCAR but the recent format change isn't for me.

I have mixed feelings about the new format; I can see both sides of it. I see both sides of the 'playoffs' as well; though I preferred the original 'chase' better. I can see why they didn't want the season championship to be decided with 3 or more races to go. One of the things that really bugs me is NBC's trying to emphasize the team aspect of racing. Sure, drivers are part of a team per se. Drivers and crews do share knowledge across their organization - Gibbs, Hendricks, Stewart Haas, etc - but in the end, it's every driver for himself.

I think that was done to keep certain drivers (48) from sandbagging the entire race, "saving" their car, and then suddenly coming out of nowhere to take the lead with 10 laps to go. Now you need to be up front all race long to get the most points.
Understand, there are now three "segments" to a race, it's like 3 different races form one. Thing is, in the past how you drove, how well you car held up, your pit strategy all played a part of having a shot when 500 laps were about to be complete. This "segmented" crap has chased off the die-hards that kept NASCAR in business for all these years, they don't care for "gimmick" crap and neither do I.

Hilarious to read how much the Toyota Camry dominated over Ford and Chevy last year...how the fvck does that happen??

https://www.usatoday.com/story/spor...ord-catch-toyota-nascar-cup-series/323587002/
  • Toyota won 16 races. Chevrolet and Ford won 10 each.
  • Toyota’s laps-led total of 5,757 was more than Chevrolet’s (2,377) and Ford’s (2,447) combined.
  • Truex and Busch led 40% of the laps run across the 36-race season.
  • Toyota won eight of the 10 playoff races.

People are not buying nearly as much as they used to. Michigan International speedway recently removed a lot of bleachers to make it look better on TV. Empty seats dont look good

Which is why Daytona now has a bunch of random colored seats:

How to win the Daytona 500, put the guy in front of you, into the wall.
This is why it's a bad idea to "block" late in the race, Aimerola went up to the top to try and stop anyone from taking his lead, very, very risky, it usually ends badly if a driver tries that. DE senior lost his life "blocking" for a teammate in the last lap, Aimerola would have been better served to simply hug the inside and hope for the best.

Does anyone else feel like they watched a 3 hour long F-150 commercial?
Well I was pissed that Fox chose to go to commercial break every 2nd lap near the end, I understand they paid a lot of $$ to air the race but it got ridiculous.

Well given the new formwat - stage racing and 'you win, you're in' - this will be the new mode. With the apparent media / upper executive level of NASCAR pushing for more excitement and mass-market appeal, I think this format is here to stay. I don't know how drivers feel now, but 10-15 years ago, many of the drivers hated restrictor plate racing because of the propensity of creating 'the big one'. Car / track safety has significantly improved since Dale Sr died, along with the 2 drivers that also died that year. I say eliminate the restrictor plate and let them run full out at Daytona and Talladega.

Without the plate's those cars would be hitting 240+ MPH, NASCAR is afraid that "catch fence" would fail if a car hit it going that fast. Agree though, drivers hate plate races.

A wheel fell off one of the cars about 30 minutes ago and rolled forward down the middle of the track in the middle of several other cars still racing in today's 500. And the commentators were saying some of the pit crew may be suspended for a length of time.

Apparently there are a few pins that go in holes in addition to the single lug put in the center of the wheel. And they said you can tighten the lug nut as far as you can go and a pin or two may not be lined up. If that's the case then the lug nut is not actually fully tightened.

Jeez man if the crew has to depend on thinking the single lug net is truly tight all the way then you may as well go back to the 5 lugs nuts of the previous gen race cars. Edit: Btw this has nothing to do with the incident 10 minutes ago when Burton's 21 car flipped over on to its top then quickly flipped again to land upright.

I gotta admit, the new cars for 2022 do look kinda cool. I like the wheels and the rear diffuser. Kinda looks like a euro-asian sports car like a Supra
