i bought corsair xms2 ddr2 675 memory, that is rated to run at 4-4-4-12 at 667mhz, is it possible, and would it be a good idea (make my comp faster) if i tried to run it at 5-5-5-15 at 800mhz... i dont know which is better, the lower latencies or the faster speed

all opinions appreciated

I think instead of overclocking your RAM, it would really make your pc faster if you overclocked your power supply.

Well I was going to wait for your answer and if you said "really and how might I do that?" I would have had a good chuckle, but... I'll find another n00blet to do that on, you seem nice anyway. On topic, this is the correct order of importance when it comes to RAM: Size>speed>timings. That being the case, loose timings such as those could be used to achieve speeds greater than 800mhz, you could hit 800mhz with 4-5-4-15 probably. What is the rest of your rig, perhaps there is somewhere else that would offer greater improvement than RAM speed. Welcome to the forums!

So what is the better ram out of these two kits,

Series Ultra
Type 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM
Capacity 2GB (2 x 1GB)
Speed DDR2 533 (PC2 4300)
Cas Latency 3
Timing 3-3-3-8
Voltage 1.8V-2.4V
ECC No
Unbuffered
Heat Spreader Aluminum Heat-spreader
at a cost of NZ$437

or

GeIL PC2-8000 1000MHz DDR2 Dual Channel Kit
Available in 1GB & 2GB (64Mx8) Dual Channel Kit
PC2-8000 1000MHz CAS 5-5-5-15
Hand-picked 64Mx8 DDR2 BGA Chips
240 pin, Non-ECC, Un-buffered DIMM
Brushed Aluminum Heat Spreader
Working Voltage: 1.9v-2.3V (CURRENTLY 2.3V)
at a cost of NZ$384

I intend plugging it into an Asus P5LD2 v2.0 with an E6400.

Pardon the noobie question, but wouldn't the answer to the OP depend on the speed of his FSB?

If he has a FSB running at 400Mhz, for instance, upgrading from DDR2 667 to DDR2 800 will definitely have a significant impact. But if his FSB is running at, say, 266MHz, then the added speed will mostly go to waste. In this latter case the timings would be more important. Is this all correct?

sorry about the prolonged answer,
and ya i ignored your first post hoping that somebody would be a little more informative
but thanks for comming back in the end

the rest of my rig is:
amd athlon x2 3800+
antec true power 550w
x-fi xm
asus m2n-sli deluxe
2gb corsair xms2 ddr2 675
and a 6200LE while i wait for my last paycheck before i order my 7900gs

ill try to just do the 800mhz at 5-5-5-15 then run prime 95 and see if it lasts awhile on that, and then go a little further on that? is that a good idea?

EDIT: i got the x2 running at 220 fsb with 10x multiplyer

that was noo good, i had to clear the CMOS because it gave me the error beeps... i guess im happy with it the way it is, unless somebody knows something else to do

all i did was: change the speed to 800, put the timings to 5-5-5-15 1T and saved and left bios

wow this is fvcking n00b thread! Vagrant that ultra is no good. You dont need the geil fast memory either. I suggest a cheap 2gb kit with 667mhz and 4-4-4-12 timings @ 1.8v. There are many kits ~$150 or lower that satisfy these terms and oc well. Such as the OCZ gold ddr2-667 2x1gb kit @ newegg for $140 AR. Wgoldfarb: the RAM speed in no way depends on the fsb speed. It does however get a little complicated with the 1:1 ratio and stuff. If you have an e6400 with 290fsb and you have ddr2-667 RAM, there is a 2:3 ratio in facor of the RAM. However if you up the fsb to 333mhz, there still exists a 1:1 ratio between the RAM and the fsb and this willl allow you to bench higher. Ratios in favor of the fsb require dividers, which decrease bench performance, but have virtually no effect on the real world performance. Remember, a 300fsb and 8x multi is inferior in performance to a 400fsb and a 6x multi both achieving the same core speed.

Why's that?
7 posts and you already have an attitude? I was making a joke! You killed it.

EDIT: Two mean jokes in one thread.... maybe a bad idea. Srry... but don't go flaming people just cuz you want to blow off steam. Your post wasn't even relevent to this thread. And FYI, I'm the only one who's answered the OP's question.
