Hello everyone,

Recently upgrade my system to AMD 2500+ with Abit NF7 v2 mobo and 2 x DDR400 512MB TwinMos ram.

CPU running at 2500 while ram speed 333, smooth and stable.

However, when the ram speed at 400, it always end-up to blue screen within 5mins in Win 2000. No matter what the CPU speed or the vcore.

Now running at 3200+ with ram speed 333, without problem for last few hours.

Is that a ram problem? Should I went back to change for other brand fo ram?

BTW, what's the common way to test the system stability these day?

The newer DDR400 sticks run in favour of the p4 chips unfortunately.

Search around on google, and sites like anandtech, toms hardware and pcstats etc, detailed reviews can be found on why certain 400+ rated memory chips will not do their speeds on AMD's.

Im not overly informed myself which is why I cannot offer you a detailed explanation, but I do know that 1 reason is related the the timings and latency on both chips.

Tried various combination of setting, v-core (as high as 1.9v, 50C idle), v-ram (2.9v), still unable to make the system run stable under with DDR400.

Any clue of why 400FSB run smooth with DDR333 but not DDR400?

I had the same problem with my previous ram (some cheap "elixir" ddr400). I found some informations on differents OC forum.

In my case, it was the ram, I installed some Kingston DDR400 and it's working alright at 200fsb now.

You should try the following :

Run at 8 x 200 default voltage to see if it's stable at 200fsb with ddr400.

If not, try 8 x 200 with a 6/5 cpu/memory ratio (you'll have 200fsb and 333 ram with this setting)

Report results.

what are your RAM timings?

you shoudl have CAS 2.5 set. for your best bet, select "Timings by SPD" or whatever option cites the SPD chip as the source for the ram timings.

Viper96720,

Now with the Timing 8,3,3,2.5, what you suggest?
Havn't read any articles about timing, don't know much about this thing.

ROcHE,

As you suggested, result below:

8x 200FSB, DDR400, failed-error on Prime95-reboot auto.
8x 200FSB, DDR333, OK, ran 2 hours of Prime95 no error.
2500+ default, DDR333, OK, past
12x 200FSB 1.65-1.95v, DDR333, either unable boot-up or hang in Win2k.
11.5x 200FSB 1.9v, DDR333, now running Prime95 an hour, going well.

So, can I say that the ram isn't DDR400? Or just the compatibility problem with NF7?

Amorphus,

Tried Optimal/Aggressive/By SPD, and they all have the same setting.

You might want to try one stick of RAM at a time and make sure you try both.

Exactly what I was going to suggest. I have two sticks of TwinMos 512MB in an NF7-S 2.0 also, and they run fine @ 2-3-2-5 timings up to about 210 FSB (together), but one is a better overclocker individually than the other.

I've had a lot of problems with the Abit NF7.

I simply could not to get several of them to work correctly with either Twinmos PC2700 or Crucial PC3200. I can only guess that these boards are extremely fussy about RAM. Unfortunately, the only 'verified' RAM that I can find is Corsair XMS LL which is about 3x the price of the RAM I have at present.

Further testing on the ram tonite.

Eash stick run smoothly at DDR400 (ran an hour Prime95 each without error). But once put them together just can stay more than 5 mins in Win.

BTW, find something on the mobo manual wondeing with this related:

On the Abit manual, it said:
"When install two PC 3200 DDR ......suggest you install......into DIMM3 (Bank 4,5) and DIMM2 (Bank 2,3) sockets."

But in Sandra mobo info, it state that the memory were on bank 0,1 and bank 4,5.

Although I tried to change their slot and no help to the result.

Seem like getting another brand of ram is the only way to go for DDR400.
