I came back from a local computer show yesterday... I bought an ASUS A7V133 motherboard with and AMD Thunderbird 850MHz (and of course a fan/heatsink). I can't get the system to boot. I hear everything whirl up, and the light on the motherboard lights up and all the fans connected to the motherboard are spinning. I cannot get anything to show up on screen and I hear no sound from the internal speaker. I tried unhooking and unplugging all components that aren't required to at least POST... (so essentially I have the processor, RAM, and video card plugged in). Nothing... all jumpers/DIP switches setting are set to auto... I even tried forcing everything, but nothing changed... the monitor LED is green when not plugged in and yellow when plugged in..(off or on)... any suggestions? I can't get anything up on the monitor and I get no beeps, even when removing the video card.

Following is a list of components that may be useful:
ASUS A7V133 motherboard
AMD Thunderbird 850MHz
Diamond Viper 330V (Riva 128zx w/4 MB RAM at 2X AGP) video card
RAM: 256 PC133 and 128 PC133

I even tried swapping the 256MB RAM with the 128MB RAM, which I know works. I also know the monitor and video card works, as I am using the to type this right now. I also attempted plugging the internal speaker plug into the motherboard the opposite way to ensure I didn't originally plug it in backwards. The RAM has been tested in BANK 1 and BANK 3. Also, the video card has a retention notch, so I tried removing the AGP tab protector. Any suggestions, questions, or comments are welcomed.

I don't have any answer, but I've never seen my LED a yellow color. Mine is either green when there's power, or OFF.

My monitor's LED goes yellow whenever my computer is off... it onjly turns off when I physically turn the monitor off.

Sounds fried to me unless the mobo is shoring against your case. It's either your mobo or cpu. Any way to exchange since you got it at a comp. show?

Make sure the CPU is seated completely... that issue alone has caused me more than once to think I had a bum motherboard.

The suggestion to also make sure the mobo isn't grounded is a good one.

Just a couple things to look at? Take your heatsink off of your chip and see if:

your core is chipped or cracked.
exactly what the processor says. (not sure about T-birds but my Duron says something like D600 for duron 600)
did you use heatsink compound.

and a couple other things to look at:

your risers on the back, make sure you remove any that aren't fitting the holes that have metal grounds around the hole. (Don't use any metal risers/standoffs with any holes in mobo without grounds.
if you power supply is rated high enough for an athlon. (I hear some people get away with 250Watts, but for a 50 Watt Athlon (typical) you will be using all the 3.3 amps a 250 can supply. A 300 Watt is recommended (AMD approved ones are a better guarantee))
just for giggles try turning it on while holding the insert key down or clear the cmos with the jumper, just to see if it is being overclocked already and it doesn't like the conditions in your box.

Hope some of this helps.

Okay... I can't do it right now, because I have a meeting soon and I need to use my computer at that meeting, but afterwards, I will try it again, becuase now I realize I have standoffs leftover from my old mobo... that is probably it is my mobo isn't dead.

WarCon: my proc does say something to the effect of 850T3B on the core.. the guy even told me to look at that before he sold it to me... so I feel pretty confident about that. Also, yes there is thermal compound and a monster heatsink with 2 fans on it. Once I tried to boot w/o the HS/Fan and it smelled just like any other component smells just before it's about to fry - which worries me a bit... I turned the comp off and puled the cpu from the socket and set it where it could cool... I think it's okay, as there are no burn indiciations... And my PS is 250watt I think.. all I can read on it is 254W Max DC Output. IT's whatever comes standard in the Enlight 7237

Thanks all.. I'm really hoping it's the standoffs in the back... I will try later tonight and post how it goes
