Dead HDD?

I was recently reinstalling Win XP on my system, which has two hard drives. I selected the drive I wanted to format and install on, but for some reason the installation decided to format the wrong hard drive. I freaked out and restarted the computer before the formatting could complete. But it was too late and the hard drive had lost its data. Now I know I can recover files from formatted drives but the problem is I cannot get the drive to format at all now. I've tried in to in DOS and in Windows with no success. Is there another piece of software for formatting NTFS drives or any other options or am I just SOL?

Your HDD mfg should have a free utility on their website. If there isn't any data to recover try deleting the partition, create a new one, then you should be able to format it. However if you want to try data recovery GetDataBack and R-Studio are quality tools.

Thanks for the reply. The mfg did not have any tools that I found outside of diagnostic utilities (its a Seagate HDD). I tried to delete the partion and create a new one with no luck. I'll try the GetDataBack when I get home this evening, my only fear is that the HDD has to be in some valid format in order to be accessed to recover the files. At any rate, thanks again for the reply and hopefully I'll be able to get some data back.
