my pc died yesterday when waking up from sleep. after swapping power cords/sources and checking the internal, i tried to start it up and only get a momentary flicker and fan spin but the on-board led stays lit.

since the antec smart power 500 is pushing 3 yrs old, and i hardly ever turn the pc off, i figured it was the culprit. i replaced it today with an earthwatts 500 and still get the same momentary flicker. i dismantled everything and took the mobo out of the case. a close look over and a long sniff of the mobo don't reveal any obvious problems. i go down to just 1 stick of ram, swap video cards, and gave it another try. still, just a momentary flicker just like when you forget to connect the eps/cpu power.

the mobo is msi p35 neo2-fir about 14 mos old. cpu is e6600 OC'd to 3ghz with 333mhz fsb strap but all other bios settings were more/less stock. anything else i can try or is the mobo dead?

I had a Msi p35 neo2-fr die on me when I pressed the reset switch in windows. It had the bios corrupted. Check your manual and from what I know, there has to be some LEDs on your mobo. In your manual, it's written what is the problem with your PC, by checking the way the LEDs are turned on.

thanks for your help but all i get is led 3 (red) lit when the power supply is turned on, and a flicker of led 1 (blue) when the power button is pressed.

Check your warranty with msi. You can request an rma online just by giving them the board serial number. They will reply within 24 hours. If they issue an rma number, expect it to take about 2 weeks to get a replacement. I ship to them by fedex ground. In the meantime, I would order is similar newegg open box board to tide you over.

I suspect the PSU died and damaged the motherboard, CPU, and/or RAM. The SP line of PSUs from Antec has a bad history of failing. Along with that they are known to damage key system components when they do fail.

Power supply probably fried the chipset. Antecs are good PSU's. Are you using a surge protector?
