Dead Playstation 2

I'm wondering if anyone out there has a dead playstation 2 (or atleast has read about how to fix them). My playstation 2 worked for about 3 weeks, perfectly fine and then it simply stopped playing anything that's not black on the bottom.

DvDs or playstation 2 games that are not black on the bottom do not get recognized whatsoever. It's the weirdest thing because regular playstation games that are black on the bottom or black bottom playstation 2 games work perfectly fine.

Anyone know how to fix this problem or what's wrong (or maybe have a place on the web that might know what's wrong [yes I already checked the playstation 2 site ])? Thanks in advance for your help.

Call Sony dude.. your PS2 should be under warranty..

I've heard SOME of the launch PS2 messing up after a couple of months of gameplay, it had something to do with the drivers. I've also heard that SONY will ask you to pay $120 to repair it. I might be wrong but in the IGN forums there are people complaining about this left and right.

i have a launch ps2. and it works fine.

reports say there are 2 versions of the PS2. the original one had a better laser and better built parts. The newer one is therefore lesser quality (probably because of production rush) and has had many reports of failures.

I forgot how you tell the difference though, something about the pegs at the bottom or something.

cost reduction in any kind of hardware is expected after first launch. Sony wants to save money. But it really doesn't mean that newer hardware is inferior to the launch hardware. A good software revision can do wonders for any hardware.
