Dead PSU in New Case?

I just got all the parts for my new system and I think the PSU is dead.

The case is an Antec P150 with the Antec 430W HE PSU. I got everything installed and powered it up and...nothing. No lights, no PSU fan, no hums, no hisses, no smoke, nothing.

I disconnected all the modular power cords sequentially and tested between each time and still nothing. I disconnected the power cords to the motherboard...nothing.

I've tried 2 different external power cords (one that was just working fine on my other system) and a half dozen outlets and still no change. The PSU makes no noise and there's nothing going on. And yes, I've flipped the power switch on the PSU each time, to no avail.

So, do you think I got a dud for a PSU?

If so, should I send the whole case back to newegg ($$$) or deal with Antec and see if they'll replace JUST the PSU?

Thanks

Im having the same problem with my new p150 and the supplied power supply. I'll need to keep an eye on this thread.

When I built my computer, I didn't have all the connections properly in place, and thought something was fried. Check all the internals.

This may sound silly but it has happened here twice in 6 weeks.

Check the case's power on button with a powered test light or an ohm meter. Your DMM will have an ohm meter setting. The switch maybe bad. Momentarily jump the two pins on the mobo that the power-on leads hook-up to. If the switch is bad this will by pass it. Jump the green and black female molexes on the 20 or 24 pin shell, this will test the PSU. The fan should spin up if the PSU is good. I would unplug most eveything before forcing the PSU to turn on. Not really sure if it would hurt to leave the other molexes hooked up but don't want to cause you harm. Try that then come back.

Edit: The green and black are near the center of that long shell.

If your PSU has a voltage selector, make sure it is on the right one. If the PSU has a power switch on the back, make sure it is turned on - the | is the On mark, the O is the Off mark. Make sure your front panel power switch is connected to the correct pins on the mobo's front panel header. And here are some other tips for when you get no video, no beeps.

.Boilerplate-01:
. Common causes of failure to boot (no video, no beeps) assuming PSU isn't totally dead:
1- RAM, CPU and/or AGP video card not seated properly, a bent pin or corrosion.
2- Drive data cable on upside down or only on half the pins or shifted a pin or two (usually Floppy or Zip drives).
3- CMOS needs to be cleared (AC power must usually be disconnected or . attempts to clear CMOS may fail) Unless your mobo does not use a power-off CMOS clear - check your mobo manual for specific info.
4- On some new mobos there is a CPU protection feature (esp. on Asus/Asrock Athlon/Socket A mobos) that will not allow the system to start if there is no fan (or a fan without a working speed sensor wire) connected to the CPU Fan power connector on the mobo (specifically marked "CPU Fan"). If you tried to start your machine without a fan properly connected, you have to attach a proper and working fan and clear the CMOS before it will boot.

Thanks for the advice, but I've tried everything except the ohmeter (don't have one).

With everything unconnected -- no cables to hard drive, motherboard, video card, fans, etc -- the PSU does absolutely nothing when I plug it in and turn the power selector on the PSU to ON. Shouldn't the PSU's fan come on even with nothing connected to the system and only the power cord from the wall outlet connected?

There is no voltage selector on the PSU, but that's a good thought.

I've contacted Antec and am waiting to find out what they say. I'd rather not have to ship the whole case and PSU back to newegg as that won't be cheap and the case itself is fine. I'm hoping Antec will let me send just the PSU back for replacement but I'm not holding my breath.

No the fan won't come on as all that is active when not fully on is the +5V Standby circuit which doesn't put off much heat, so there is no +12 available for the fan(s). Just plug a couple of fans up to the PSU and switch the PSU on by shorting the green wire in the ATX connector to a black one momentarily. See if the fans come on - both the ones in the PSU and the ones connected to it.
. Remember, some recent Antec PSUs don't turn one or more their internal fans on at all until a certain temp. is reached.

Uhhh, nevermind...

My PSU wasn't dead, but that organ between my ears was.

Turns out, after I tried Zepper's suggestion the connected case fan came on. I connected the PSU to the motherboard and still nothing. Then, I remembered that this new Epox 9NPA+Ultra has a power and reset switch built in to it. I hit the power button on the motherboard and voila. Dang thing came right on.

It seems that the Power On, Reset, HDD Light, etc cables were on backwards, despite my being almost positive I put them on both ways.

Anyway, I'm installing XP on my new system right now...

...and wiping egg off my face.

Thanks so much for all ya'lls help

And thank you Viremia for having the intestinal fortitude to let that egg be seen on your face.

By pushing ego out of the way, we can all help eachother.

Glad you found the solution, it feels good to see one in the threads i subcribe too.
