Here's a reason: I don't want to be stuck with a an oversized iphone that only does what Steve Jobs approves.
right, you'd rather be stuck in an ecosystem with no apps

Android tablets are just completely fucked. There is absolutely no reason to buy one. Unless you want to buy a cheaper inferior product.
Of course there are. Some people just don't like iOS. That's why there's Blackberry, Windows, and Android phones too.

what's not to like? sounds like irrational hatred to me.
Is this a joke?

is it funny? stand back and evaluate the tablets objectively, what's not to like about the iPad aside from being an apple product?
it's got the most apps
retina display
thin and light
best battery life
probably the fastest cpu/gpu
best build quality
best resale value
how's that xoom doing? transformer?
LOL Apple just killed the high end tablet market...
and yet the apple store crashed from the pre-orders. it's madness i tell you
You really ought to check your facts before posting something like that.
-retina display is debatable until we see detailed specs for it
-The Transformer Prime, Transformer Infinity, Galaxy Tab 10.1, Galaxy Note 10.1, and Toshiba Excite are all thinner and lighter than the iPad 3, some of them are substantially thinner.
-The Galaxy Tab 7.7 has better battery life
-The cpu is guaranteed not to be the fastest, the gpu might be the fastest depending on what the next gen Exynos parts use.
-built quality is subjective
-the resale value won't be very good once the iPad 4 hits.
-retina specs are already available,
2048-by-1536-pixel resolution at 264 pixels per inch (ppi)
-ok, so there are smaller tablets than the iPad, what about as a whole? is there a single android competitor to the iPad? you can't cherry pick specs from a dozen devices to to compare with the a single device.
-I said probably, we'll wait for the benchmarks, apple claims superior performance to tegra 3, we'll see.
-how is build quality subjective? aesthetics is subjective, build quality is objective. iPad is a solid piece of aluminium versus plastic shells on android tablets.
-this is idiotic, people were still selling their ipad 2s for $400+ a year after its debut just last week. How much is that transformer worth now? android resale is just terrible, period.
i'm probably not going to buy one but i really hope this pushes us beyond the terrible 720p resolution for notebooks and meh 1080p for desktops.
Those specs aren't enough to say that the Retina display is superior. I realize Apple fans only care about resolution but things like contrast, black levels, and brightness matter to the rest of us.
All of the tablets I mentioned are 10.1" models so they are a perfectly valid comparison to the iPad. If you want to pick one of them pick the Transformer Infinity, it's 7.6mm thick and weighs 586g. It's also expected to have ~10 hours of battery life so it may equal the iPad 3 on that front as well.
We know A5X is a dual core Cortex A9 with a new gpu so it's obvious Tegra 3 and Krait will have superior cpus. As I said the gpu may be the best but it's hard to be 100% sure without knowing exactly what it is.
The Transformer Infinity, Transformer Prime, and Galaxy Tab 7.7 are all aluminum as well.
Some of us expect our tablets to last longer than a year so the release value after a few months isn't relevant.
