Dead Signal from Soundcard

My roommate wants to run his computer sound out to his stereo. No big deal. He specifically wants to know if a soundblaster live! or an audigy would give him a dead signal. In words I can't remember (I can get him to specify later if need be) he said that if a car cd player sends out a signal that would give power to an amp, the amp would eventually return the power and burn out the head unit (a bad thing). He's concerned about the system he's installing getting power from the soundcard and then burning it (the card) out later. He's looking to hook up rca's to the card and then amp the signal once it gets to the sound system.

I hope everyone (or someone) can follow that.

ummm... is your roommate trying to hook his amp to the amplified out on the soundcard? that would result in some bad things. a line-out would be the best solution. the speaker jacks aren't powered anymore though, so he could plug into one of those as well.

I know nothing about sound. I admit it. My knowledge of sound cards ends at "the Live! 5.1 won't work on the KT133 chipset." So long as the outs aren't powered I think he'll be okay.
