so..uh...how much storage between those 7 drives?
not as much as you might expect. 120, 120, 80, 80, 40, 40, 7.44
total of 487.44
its not completely full. currently the playlist is 79 days long with a little over 20,000 songs all ripped from CDs or purchased legally (but not all by me obviously). i made a point to have no illegal music on there incase there was some sort of issue. i realize, however, that it probably isnt legal to copy them and share it, but its better IMO than just downloading it from a P2P program.

just got done with this...well its not totally done yet, but i have too much to do over the next few weeks to really mess with it. ill eventually put some cold cathodes in there and make a hard drive activity panel with all 7 drives attached to it. i made a fanbus to go in the front, but as i said earlier, no time to install it...
anyway, just thought id share the pictures so if anyone else was interested in doing something like this, here is an idea to get you started.
3 intake fans, 3 exhaust fans
7 hard drives, room for 1 more
450w PSU modified to have twelve 4-pin molex connectors
oh, and im working on installing dual NICs to handle the mass demand on it...im not sure how thats going to work or if its even possible, but its having trouble ATM because 40-50 people are trying to connect to it all at once.
FYI, i am not illegally distributing music. i have iTunes setup so they can all listen to it but not steal it. ourtunes doesnt work on our network, so that is a non-issue.
edit: Text
its for the dorm, not the school...sorry, used the wrong word.

At graduation or pending graduation, are the MP3's distributed back to the owner of the original CD, deleted, or do you get to keep them since it's your server?
people from around here that actually own the CD and paid for it come to my room and rip it to the computer. there is a huge difference between doing that and downloading it from someone else and mass distributing it.

What exactly is the point of that, unless they are paying you.

Nice job.
It will look cool with the cold cathodes.
can you explain how the server actually serves the songs? does itunes have a server that makes songs accessible over the network?
