The last guy I met with that much HD space in a dorm had every episode of Duck Tales on DivX. Duck Tales. It was like he was screaming "I have no idea what else there is to steal on the Internet!"

i consider duck tales to be the coolest disney cartoon i watched as a child.

Edit: oh, and the computer is pretty cool. i think any comments about legality and ethics i would have made have already been stated.

Sorry, dude - this isn't even grey area. Unless you're paying royalites to act as a broadcaster, you're well outside "hobbyist" or "personal use" here.

they are shared over the network anyway. if i took the server off, all the same music would still be available most of the day. i should have explained more clearly what iTunes is/does and how music is "shared" in the dorm. most people here are gung-ho about not pirating stuff.

edit: i mean i agree with you, this probably isnt legal, but i dont think its wrong given the situation. im not cheating the artists out of money, and thats all i care about really. as long as they arent being screwed, then i dont feel like im doing any harm.

You're getting awful close to crossing the boundary into a Stupid Pirate. :frown:

It is illegal. It is "wrong." And you are cheating them out of money, because if other people wanted the music they stream from you, they'd buy it to add to their iTunes collection.

Not that I give a flying four-letter word for fornication about it. Just noting.

The iTunes streaming is only for personal use, meant for home networks so people can listen to music (which they already legally purchased) on multiple computers. Broadcasting your music collection to your dorm is piracy. Please remove your head from your ass.

sorry, not trying to be a stupid pirate...i want to remain a smart pirate by all means.

ok, i will concede that it is illegal, but i dont submit that it is completely 100% wrong. if the people in the dorm wanted to here it and i wasnt sharing it, they would just browse another computer and find the same song since it is definitely out there somewhere. the artists were paid for the CD, and the CD was put on iTunes which is perfectly legal. the ONLY thing illegal here is having songs on my computer that are not MINE, and i understand that. however, the only songs on this computer and that will ever be on this computer were paid for and, while they still may be pirated once, it isnt being distributed and never will be.

i stand by my position that im not ripping off the artist since im not allowing illegally downloaded music on the server, and while i do agree that this is illegal, as i said before, at least im only accepting legal music on my illegal server. im not sure that makes much sense.

please, dont revoke smart pirate status :gift:

You're a fvcking moron.

Who cares if It's illegal, If he gets caught, he gets caught, If not... more power to him.

I would like to do a detailed search of the hardrives of all the "holier-than-thou" pricks that are giving him a hard time. I'd be willing to bet that 99% of the people on AT have some form of pirated data in their possesion.

Judge not lest ye be judged, bitches....

*edit*

If you have never been in possesion of said pirated data, then I tip my hat to you... You've got a stronger will than me...

The only iffy thing is the definition of 'home use' and 'public use'...

AND the encoding of the music to 'your server' that 'you' didn't 'purchase'. Sure someone else purchased it but it isn't on their iTunes share or it may be but they don't leave their comp on all the time. If they are off then no one can listen to that single/ album etc. But since you have it all on your server it is for everyone to listen to. That is the thing they will bust you on.

As for me your comp looks cool and I don't think anyone is going to bust you for it. It is a nice thing you did for the form

I don't really give a sh!t about it being illegal, I just don't like these half-assed rationalizations over it. He sounds like a chick who's screwing all her boyfriend's buddies and still needs to be right.

Bad analogy, but you get the point.

the only thing im going to say about this whole thing is that none of the music on there was NOT paid for,

But thats the point. Even if you d/l said album 'someone' paid for it usually or stole a copy but say it was bought and it was shared for 1000's to d/l someone still bought it in the first place. It doesn't mean it is right. Granted your not 'sharing' for them to d/l but sharing for them to listen too.

If the person who bought the music shared it via iTunes then it would be 100% legal. But because it is on your server it isn't.

But I'm with you on this though

no its not. im not whining and complaining about it. i honestly thought about it and tried to come up with a way to do this and NOT screw over the artist. all kidding aside, i really think i did the best i could to not make this illegal, even though it still is, and not screw any artists out of money. throw around all the lame insults you want, but i dont see the point since im not trying to be a badass and steal lots of music for the fun of it.

Stop. Now. Breathe. Know you're doing the world a service either way. And that's a TOTALLY FRICKIN' AWESOME analogy whether or not it's right, and you're retarded if you deny it. Nobody cares if it's legal or not, just play the fvcking track.

Ok, here it is...

Bands are paid for each cd sold. By the book, CDs are for one person's enjoyment. Just like software. One license, one computer.

Copying a cd for personal backup is ok (incase cd gets scratched/broken).

Copying somone else's cd is wrong (but you've already admitted it)

Putting these songs on a server and allowing other people to listen is wrong because the other people did not pay for the right.

Now if you physically give the original cd to someone, so that you will no longer recieve enjoyment from the cd is fine.

Radio stations pay royalties to the bands.

ITunes pays for the right to do what they do.

Anything else?
