But a big pro-PS3 argument has been "free online play". I don't see why Microsoft wouldn't bundle a new console with "free online play..... for a year" to stay competitive.
Especially when they are making a pretty substantial profit on Live as compared to hardware.
Your second paragraph answers the first. They make a tidy sum from Live subs, and the fact that they charge for online multiplayer isn't hurting them in sales whatsoever compared to the PS3.
How does it?
Everyone who buys a 360 does not have a Live account. Everyone who has a Live account already has a 360.
Instead of continually lowering the borderline profitable price of the hardware, they could stimulate hardware sales by packaging in their profitable software. I also think "free multiplayer" is a pretty substantial bullet-point to have on the box (even with the "for one year" subtext), and you're under-estimating how much that helps the PSN.
Again, just a theory. I also theorized that an official Live subscription price drop was coming. These buy.com and amazon.com $30 Live "deals" as of late leads me to be even more suspicious of this.
Perhaps a Live bundle for the E3 crowd, and then an official price drop come Holiday season?
I am certain Microsoft wants people to have months remaining on their accounts by the time the new consoles come around - it will make the 360-to-720? transition far more logical.
