My money is on the mirror. A big part of weight training is developing awareness of your body in space and mirrors can really screw that up. The image in the mirror only shows you one angle and can be very deceiving. I bet relying (whether consciously or not) on this inaccurate image is why you aren't going to full depth and have funky technique. I've seen my technique screw up similarly whenever I end up near a mirror, so I now consciously position myself at the gym in a way I can't see them.

Its possible. The three things I listed are the three things that are different between the powerlifting gym and the regular gym. Unfortunately, all the power racks are smack in front of the mirror - I've tried looking above it, but its high & close, so that doesn't really help. I suppose I could just flip the bar around and put it on the "back" of the rack, facing the rest of the gym...

Tried some new shirts today. Inzer RageX 38 was too small - couldn't get it past the elbow. Titan Fury 38 went on but the arms were still very tight. Couldn't get into the right groove, tried a bigger shirt. Felt a lot better. Touched 325 with a pause. It might have been too low for USAPL, but it was still a good lift.

^^^ I put a little chalk on the bottom of the middle knurling of the bar. That way when you touch you can see where on the shirt you touched. If you hit the IPF logo or above you're good to go...

When I was at a gym with unavoidable mirrors (couldn't reverse the hooks in the power rack) I just put one of those blue stretching mats up against the mirror so that I couldn't see myself at the bottom of squats. My current gym I just reverse the hooks so I look into the middle of the gym (unfortunately I can still see myself in a mirror on the opposite wall, I just try to blur my vision).

In your experience, how much extra poundage do you get out of shirts versus benching raw? Did it take a long time to get used to it?

That's a good idea, I should try that next time. There were a couple of USAPL judges there, they weren't really in proper judging positions so they were hesitant to call it legal or not, just said that it looked a little low.

I'm pretty sure I can reverse the hooks, it never really occurred to me to try it. I'm doing a deload squat day tomorrow, I'll give it a whirl. Looking out over the gym is more like in competition anyway.

As for the bench shirts...well, its hard to say. I've only ever benched in a shirt twice, still learning. We haven't found a shirt that really fits me right - apparently my arms are big for my size (who knew, I always thought I had kinda small arms), so we're testing out various different shirts.

That said, my raw bench right now (after losing some weight and not really recovering yet) is likely around the 280 range. I did a 325 in the shirt yesterday. So that's a 45lb jump, not too bad, but from what I'm told that's pretty low. Once I get the hang of it & we find a shirt that fits me right, I should be up to 350+.

The thing with gear, is that it helps everyone a different amount. Its a combination of having the right shirt/suit, knowing how to use it properly, as well as where your weak point on the lift is. For example - the deadlift. Most people get very little out of a deadlift suit - maybe 5-40lbs. Some people (like my coach) pull better raw. That's because most people have a sticking point at the very top, at the lockout. Me? I struggle to get the bar an inch off the floor, where the suit helps the most. When it hits my knees, it snaps up. Hence I get about 100lbs out of a suit.

I really dislike my deadlift. Its just not improving. Granted this was no belt/chalk, but the 375 was a struggle, and there's no reason for that. I can't wait for this next meet to be over so I can just tear it down and change something, see if I can't figure out what the hell is wrong.

Tried a new shirt today. Definitely seems like a better fit than the 40 Titan Fury I wore last time. Still need some work in it though - couldn't get 325 to touch.

Good day squatting. I was hoping to get a third rep on the 360, but the 1st and 2nd were tough grinds so there was no way a 3rd would happen. Still, best day of raw squats in awhile. My strength dropped a decent amount when I cut over February/March, so its good to be back up to the level I was at before.

A little better than last time I pulled in the suit, but still not great. I can't seem to find a suit that fits me at 160-165. I tried putting on a new one - Inzer Fusion 28 - it was way too small, no one had any Inzers that were in my size range. The Titans are as tight as I could wear in the legs, but the upper body is too loose...its way too easy to get down to the bar, which to me is a sign of not getting enough out of the suit. I'm ordering a new suit for squatting - new suits are tighter by default - I'll probably have to have that taken in to be tighter in the hips and shoulders.

I will, after this meet in June. Seven weeks out, I wouldn't be able to gain enough weight for it to be worthwhile.

Then again, the more gear I wear, the more I hate it, so I'll most likely be going back to raw after this meet anyway...

What meet are you doing? I don't see any upcoming meets listed on the Washington USAPL website.

Interesting. I think I will either do that meet or the Washington's Strongest Apple strongman competition on June 12.

For what its worth, this meet is usually the cheapest of the year, and its right near downtown Seattle, so (for me at least) its convenient.

I have a friend doing a USAPL meet in Ohio on the same day. The entry fee for that meet is $35. $65 is not cheap.

Not cheap, but cheaper than other meets around here. Columbia City & States were both $80, and Alki is $75/lift.

It was $75 for a single lift, and I think a slight discount of like $140 for both. Ridiculous.
