try memtest first. when I upgraded from my x1950xt to my 3870 I had a memory defect that I incorrectly diagnosed as video card-related.

Yeah, just finished that, & of course, it's fine. (It would have had to have died in the last couple weeks anyway, as i'd tested it recently.)

I'm running some IntelBurnTest aka LinPack in SafeMode to see what happens.

Reading through this thread I am starting to question my choice of a GTX260/GTX280 or maybe I should look at a ATI 4870...

Ouch... Doesn't sound like you've had any good luck lately, n7. I'd hold off buying any lottery tickets for awhile if I were you.

I got a bfg 280 gtx oc, the card is very fast. However I can use it for 5 minutes only after which it's game over.

Logged to a file and looked at it after the computer crash. Temperature goes to 100 celsius in 2-3 minutes, to 113 celsius in 2 more minutes and that's it. Fan sounds like a freight train, always goes up to 100% when something 3d starts up.

It took days for bfg to send a rma, hopefully I don't have to go through 10 cards until one works right.

Well, have to pay shipping to send back to bfg. So much about that. It's my pleasure to pay shipping several times over until I get something that works, I actually demand bad stuff so I can keep paying shipping costs for a while. :disgust:

Again, I think you guys are nuts for settling for warranty service if you're still within the retailer's return/replacement period. All this does is take away options for recourse with a high probability of receiving a serviced/refurbished part in return. If you paid for a new, working part, that's what I'd expect in return if you're within your return period. If they're unable to satisfy that expectation, you still have the opportunity to get a refund. Most retailers do not charge restocking on defective parts and its certainly something to keep in mind when you shop around.

I asked them for 100% refund, I won't pay extra for broken stuff, that defeats the whole purpose of looking for the better deal in the first place.

I guess you didnt see what the X2 idle temps are at? My 280 is OC'd to all hell and I never see over the 70's @ 55% fans...

That temp. is because of the cooler used not the core...!!

What cooler is Ocguy31 using on his 280?

Ugh. This sounds a lot like my experience with my BFG 6800nu. I know a lot of people like BFG, but I'll never be buying one of their products again.

I had a BFG 6800GT that crashes like that. Replaced the card from retail and it worked fine since. Was quite the annoyance though.

No more BFG for me forever.

After browsing this thread I'm sorta glad I got my 4870, but I should have grabbed a new PSU and got myself a 4870x2. Doesn't matter really though, it works for me.

Sorry to hear about your guys' troubles.

Sorry to hear about your guys' troubles.

My 6800 was artifacting as soon as I hit the power button on the PC. At the BIOS screen there would be artifacts all over. It was so bad I couldn't tell if it got to the Windows desktop or not if it wasn't for the start up sound. I called BFG and they said that my problem was Windows drivers. I tried to explain to them that the drivers for the video card don't load until Windows loads, they are not used in the BIOS. After countless hours on hold and numerous palm to the forehead conversations with their 'tech support' I finally was able to RMA the card. I got a replacement that did the exact same thing on the first boot up. Everything was tested and retested, it was definitely the BFG video cards. What a nightmare that experience was.
