Dell 2005FPW Lines Shimmering

There are some lines shimmering on the left side of the monitor, it takes up 1/4 of the screen. The lines can only be seen if looked closely on a dark screen (green and gray backgrounds work well, can't see with black though). Help, this is a pretty new monitor, bought it a month ago and now it has a problem...

You using the DVI output with maybe a 6800 nvidia card? I ran into the same problem and had to use VGA connector for it to go away. I think its a problem with 6800 cards in general. I upgraded to a 7800 GT and could use the DVI with no problems. It's definitely not a monitor problem as far as I can tell.

NVidia chips in general do have a signal integrity problem at high-resolution DVI. Only those cards that employ separate DVI transmitter chips don't - and maybe the absolute very latest NVidia chips that employ dual-channel DVI transmitters finally fix this.

Maybe thats a problem with the 6800's, ie 6800 GT, 6800 ultra, 6800 vanilla, etc. If your using a 6800 card unkno what I did is just move over to VGA and that fixed the annoyance. Also the quality difference was minimal to me and I didnt notice any ghosting on either VGA or DVI. So a possible temp fix could be sticking with VGA till you upgrade.

I had a BFG 6800 ultra at the time.

It has been a well known problem with GF4 and 5000 series GeForce chips, and in fact reaches all the way down to the GF2MX.

well, i'm using an ATI X800GTO2 (unlocked and overclocked to X850XT PE) and i'm using DVI...the resolution i'm using is 1680x1050...

With an ati card, yes. I'd say 99% of people who get shimmering have nvidia cards. This is quite odd.

Using ATI 5.13 Drivers and i only have one PCIe video card......anyways, i tried Wreckage's link (using powerstrip) and it didn't work.....thanks anyways...is it the video card or the monitor......hmmm

changing the hz somewhat fixes the problems...

hmmm, it also seems to work with 75hz and other settings.....would there be any damages if i set it at 75hz?

60Hz is ideal for LCDs, especially on DVI. You may want to take a look at the bottom two checkboxes here:

tried it.....it was checked by default....now when i try it with like 75hz or 65hz, there won't be any lines shimmering, but now, the area that had the lines shimmering (left side), if i leave something open for a while (5-10mins), there appears to be a burn-in effect but it goes away very quickly if i change what's on the screen. The burn-in effect could only be seen when it's displaying a dark screen.

You're on DVI, right? Uncheck those three, then go to 60Hz and stay there.

i appreciate your help....yea i'm on dvi, i have unchecked both of those dvi settings (at 60hz, 1680x1050) and there still appears to be line shimmering....

Huh. Well about the only things left to do are to try a different video card (to see if it's the monitor), or try a different monitor to see if it's the video card. Otherwise go with whatever settings appear to work for you.

ok, i have tried hooking up the monitor with the VGA cable on the GTO2 and there is no problems/defects..........I have also tried hooking the monitor with DVI cable onto another older computer running an Nvidia FX5200 and there's no lines shimmering


does this mean it's a video card defect?

LCDs should be set to their manufacturer recommended settings -- both for resolution and refresh rate. Try the 6.1 drivers and setting the card to stock speeds.
