Very nice.

So this is basically better than the Gateway XHD3000 in every regard except likely upscaling.

*S-IPS vs. S-PVA
92% vs. 72% color gamut
More inputs (two dual link DVI + Display Port being the most notable)

But i suspect it will still lose on resolution upscaling...

(I'm making a couple assumptions here - namely the panel type.)

O shit S-IPS and with multiple native res? I was considering a NEC 2690wuxi but after this I may go with the Dell.

30 inch would be a gigantic monitor. I would love this, I am not sure how appropriate it would be for gaming these days, though. Would be nice for general computer usage and movies. Is #10 in the picture a Coax in?? If so, would be great use for TV without spending 100 bucks on one of those boxes to convert a monitor into a TV.

I hope the scaler's decent as I don't trust either ATi or nVidia to drive a panel like that and properly maintain the aspect ratio.

I'd love to have a panel that sized, but video technology needs to advance to the point that a midrange card can effectively handle the 2500x1600 resolution. Though, I guess anyone with the cash to buy a 30in LCD also has the cash to buy SLI 8800 Ultras.

Does anyone know if this will have the silver finish like the 2707, or if it uses the normal boring black frame?

Remember, depending on usage a 37" 1080p LCD television panel could be a much better option and allay that concern of yours. You don't have anywhere near the pixel numbers, but you have a display a good card can easily handle, an even larger display, less cost, and a better movie watching platform.

I'm no expert, but I didn't think multiple native rez was possible since each pixel is physically one pixel? It might scale well, but native rez has to be like the highlander, there can be only one.

yep, "multiple native res" is an oxymoron

After owning a 30" monitor, I can certaily say that it is too large for me. It was cool at first, but then I started having to move back so damn far just to be able to play games competitively. It is just too large... Just get a smaller display and compensate by moving it a tad closer. I am currently running a 1650 X 1050 display @ 21.6" and I can't see any pixelation when I move the display to take up my entire field of view. The pixels are so small already that I cannot even see the dead pixels unless I view them direct on at about 2" away.

Nice display though, if that large size is your thing.

Connectivity is the #1 reason this monitor is important, and that was the main reason that I hadn't upgraded to a 30''incher till now. Good move from Dell.
The main point though for me and that's where the Gateway 30'' with the Realta HQV chip has created great expectations is the down/up scale features.. Ppl in forums say that using a non native resolution in the Gateway produces great IQ almost as good as if it was in the native resolution. This is a known problem with the vast majority of monitors thus far. I tried to play Crysis @1440x900 in my 2707wfp and the IQ looked like crap (through hardware or software scaling),so I chose to lower the details in order to play @my native 1920x1200. Seriously this is a major disadvantage (bad scaling) for many ppl especially when you consider that you are dealing with a native resolution of 2560x1600 and you'll likely have the need to play at lower resolutions at a more frequent rate.

I hope in this area Dell will be almost as good or better as the Gateway monitor is..

I love my 3007WFP-HC display, but it certainly could be better as product. At least the 3008WFP makes it better because of connections, but I really also want to see it with something like the Realta chip. Why always a compromise somewhere?

Nvidia sorta fixed the scaling problem with 8800 series:

http://nvidia.custhelp.com/cgi...d_adp.php?p_faqid=2064

It works and 1920 * 1200 doesn't look that small on this display, using no scaling at all with black borders all around, but certainly better than a scaled picture. A thing I wonder about: with all that processing power around today in high-end setups, why can't whatever the Realta chip is doing, be done through software emulation?

So will this use that Realta HQV scaler as well? If so, this would own the Gateway that is currently out.

Input #10 looks like a COMPOSITE video input with #11 being S-VIDEO. I'd be shocked if they put an ATSC tuner in one of these things anytime soon; though you'd think it wouldn't be that much of an added cost, seeing how tiny ATSC tuner hardware has become.

Glad I never jumped on the Gateway, assuming they were smart enough to use a decent scaler this could be a great display.

 for competition in this space.

The gateway seems to have some kickass PiP feature though... not the kind of thing I'd expect Dell to match given their history...

*crosses fingers for a super HQ scaler*
