Dell Laptop Warranty

Hi, I will be entering college next month and I'm currently in the process of ordering a laptop. I'm planning on buying a Dell because my school supports them and has an agreement with Dell which allows them to do repairs on them in their campus computer store. When I was configuring the specs my machine, though, I realized it would be cheaper to add my own RAM, but I'm worried about voiding the warranty by doing so. Does anyone know if this is likely? I've looked at Dell's site and it says that the limited warranty will not cover "servicing not authorized by Dell" or "problems caused by using accessories, parts, or components not supplied by Dell." However, I could find nothing that said adding RAM would void the warranty. So does adding RAM myself sound like a good, safe idea? Or should I just buy it from Dell?

It shouldn't be a problem...I mean we used to use Dell desktops at home, and my dad added all sorts of PCI cards to it. Of course, if he called the help-line, they woudl ask him to remove all the stuff that did not come with the machine. Fair enough.

adding ram is fine, just keep whatever you get from dell and if you have a problem make sure that is what is in there when you have them look at it. Also make sure to buy the ram from a reliable source (newegg or crucial and that it speciifes that the ram will work in your machine, to limit potential problems)

you will not void the warrenty by adding your own RAM. just make sure if you do have a problem with the laptop, the RAM is removed before calling DELL. They will never know you installed and removed a 3rd party RAM stick.

If you send them a system with 3rd party parts, they can blame it on the part and not look at the system.
