Dell Memory Question

My daughter has a 2005 Dell XPS 400 computer. She was having problems which turned out to be with the memory. It wouldn't boot. The beep codes indicated a memory problem. I reset the memory sticks and that fixed it. But I noticed that it only had 512 mb of memory. I went to Dell's support website and using the Tag No. I checked for the memory type in the Parts and Upgrades section. It listed P6400 memory. So I ordered 2 gb of P6400. When I went to put it in I realized that the memory in the computer was P4200. So I removed the P4200 and installed the 2Gb of P6400. Everything seems fine. Now my questions. Will the two different speed memories run together? Will the P6400 run at 800mhz on this computer?

I believe it'll run as the slower memory. i dont think a xps 400 can even run pc2-6400, do you know what processor is in it ? also I hope you didn't get rip off on those memory, crucial has compatible memory for less..

The processor is a Pentium D 2.8 gh. It is doing fine with the new memory. I paid 35 for 2 gb. In the BIOS it shows 2 gb at 667 mhz

If you put memory of two different speeds into a computer, the faster memory will run at the speed of the slower memory.

If you have a 2GB stick, then I would just leave that one installed and not bother with the original 512MB stick. Leaving that installed will force the 2GB stick to run at 512MB stick speeds and I don't think you can dual channel RAM of a different capacity, thats if that PC supports dual RAM.
