Damn I am going to wait But come april I am jumping on baord and get the new server.

If you are looking for a Good Linux All in one server deal I would check out clarkconnect. It is a sweet little program I have been using it for A while and I love it.

This system is TOTAL Over kill for it though.

Drive Bays:
2 x 1.0" Non-Hot Swap for hard-drives
1 x 3.5" Floppy
2 x 5.25" for CD-ROM

That would be pretty neat if it supported domain authentication and the like. Not bad for the house or other location where security is not a primary concern.

Imagine us, regulars and all of our impulse buys. It's getting hard to afford to save.

Just add the Intel® Pentium®4 processor, 520, 2.8GHz, 1MB Cache, 800MHz FSB [add $99 or $2/month1] still a good deal & a much better proc. but is it worth the extra $100?

I think the best deals on the 400SC when they were around was $317 with a P4?

i buy these for businesses just to use as a BDC. A copy of Win2K3 server on newegg is ~300.00, cheaper than Dell. Just order the newegg copy with a oem microsoft mouse or something

The deal is not exactly dead. You save $30, get a free HD upgrade to 160 GB (instead of 40GB) but loose some RAM (256MB vs. 512MB).

I went to Dell today and saw it for $229.00. And the free upgarde is - FREE QUADRUPLE UPGRADE to 160GB SATA Hard Drive . I think this is a great deal!

I am thinking about getting one with the P4 2.8

It mentions the DVD drive as "half-height." Can I swap in a standard DVD-RW drive?

$229 now... very tempted to get this and use as my firewall

Btw, is there anything special they use for the floppy, or is it just a regular one that I can install myself and not pay $30 extra?

[EDIT]
nvm on that last one, found the asnwer in the FAQ:
Q: Does the SC420 come standard with a floppy drive?
A: No, but one is available as an option if you want to spend $30 to have Dell install the drive. The connectors are there and rails are included by default, even if you don't select the floppy option, so it's a simple process to add one yourself later by supplying a drive and cable.

Ok, for some reason, I don't see the double memory for free but did see the quadruple HD upgrade for free. Mine came out to $239.

PowerEdge SC420:
Celeron 2.53Ghz, 533Mhz FSB
No OS
256MB DDR, 533Mhz single ranked
Standard Keyboard, Mouse
FREE QUADRUPLE UPGRADE to 160GB SATA Hard Drive
Onboard NIC
48X, Compact Disk Drive
Onboard SATA, 1 Drive connected to Onboard SATA Controller
1 Year Basic Plan

What am I doing wrong? Where's the RAM upgrade?

You're probably right. The free 512MB for $249 looked like a better deal than the free 160GB for $229 they have now. DDR2 ECC is pretty damn expensive, $146 for 512MB from Crucial.
