Dell Ram - What's the point?

I work for a large company who deals with middlemen when it comes to buying hardware. I went to newegg, created a quote for the parts I wanted (part #s included w/ lengthy details to ensure the right part was ordered). The purchaser has now gone to two other companies to get quotes and they have come back with 300 annoying little questions about the RAM "to make sure I get the right RAM." It was annoying, but whatever, I played along.

Now I'm being asked if "Dell RAM" is "ok" for the some of the RAM I'm ordering (since some is going in Dell machines). Now, lets be honest, Dell RAM is just someone elses RAM rebranded. So whereas I put in for Crucial memory from newegg.com I'm going to end up with Dell rebranded RAM from Joe Bob's Computing Company.

I'm only asking because I'm pretty sure the sellers are trying to sell me the lowest end equipment they can instead of what I asked our procurement department for. Anyone think this will make a difference or am I wasting breath? Thanks.

If the memory can handle the frequency you need, who cares what brand it is. They'll all work the same. It isn't like you'll be overclocking the stuff and need the last drop of performance from the best timings. So if you put it in and it runs, then why worry? If you get it and it doesn't run, then return it and get different memory. It isn't that big of a problem. You do of course need to make sure the ram is the same frequency (like they aren't dumping PC2700 when you need PC3200 for full speed operation.

That said, Dell branded RAM usually costs about double the amount that the equivalent ram costs. Thus I believe that the sellers aren't trying to get you the lowest end equipment. Maybe they are just superstitious that the RAM brand must match the brand that is labeled on the case.

Just because they're selling me something expensive doesn't mean it's good. It's Dell bending people over the same way Apple does on RAM.

It matters because if I buy it and it fails, I'm the one who looks bad.

Just buy from Crucial's website with their memory selector. It has always worked for me and Crucial seem confident with their system as well.

In the unlikely event that it doesn't work, tell your customer that they must have shipped the wrong part out to you.

I can't buy. It has to go through the procurement department. I can merely put in a list of the parts I need and recommend a a vendor. But because we're a government contractor they have to go through certain other types of vendors first (basically affirmative action for businesses).

If you read the thread you would see that we were not confused by this rebranding of products.

We're not idiots who believe all big manufacturers. :disgust:
